IMHO, we invest far too much energy and emotional involvement on individual politicians......
..... and not enough on movements and organizing, independent of the political party structure.

Better labor laws didn't come about because politicians did the right thing; They came about because workers organized, took action and forced them to do the right thing.

And civil rights didn't come about because of JFK's and LBJ's good intentions - they came about because marches and civil disobedience forced them to put good intentions into action.

That's why I suppose that in my disappointment about the election results, I'm very excited about being FAR more involved in issue-oriented movements that I've been a casual participant in, such as smart growth/public transit, after-school programs for children etc etc. The politicians can either support them or get run over by them.

1. Absolutely
The left, whatever it is, needs to employ movement politics tactics. But Americans forgot how to do it over two generations ago. It is no coincidence the last NATIONAL strike happened in 1950.

2. I agree. We also divest far too much power in them...

they should facilitate the logistical needs for hospitals, schools and roads -- the commons -- but should have no power whatsoever to legislate morality beyond violent crime.

4. Spend a million dollars on a website for Florida, please!
Or, do a Cenk-style, Stewart style local television commentary that brings out the hypocrisy. In Florida you'll find a lot of material.
