San Francisco law requires healthier fast food kids meals


SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- San Francisco lawmakers have approved legislation they hope will force fast-food chains such as McDonald's to make their children's meals healthier or stop selling them with toys.

The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to approve an ordinance that would limit toy giveaways in children's meals that have excessive calories, sodium and fat. It also requires servings of fruits or vegetables with each meal.

The measure drew enough support to overcome an expected veto by Mayor Gavin Newsom. The supervisors are expected to vote again to override the veto.

Supervisors say the law would make San Francisco the first major city to take this action to combat childhood obesity.

the one thing that always frustrates me about Chicago is the surrounding area. My friends and family members who live in California can go whenever they want (and do!) to the ocean, the mountains, the desert, wine country, and amazing national parks. Then they can come home to the city and have that cool urban experience. Chicagoans can go to...Lake Michigan, Starved Rock, the Dells, the dunes, Door County. All of which are nice, but not something I'd travel cross county to visit. And not something I find exciting to visit repeatedly. As a city, Chicago is hard to beat, but I sure wish I could pick it up and put it somewhere better (and more temperate).

Real estate people got very wise to all that shortly after I lived there, in the mid-seventies...I mean, it was always a LITTLE more expensive I think, but back when I lived there (1970-71)I was able to pay (do you believe it?)$120 a MONTH for a nice studio in Nob Hill..and wages were higher to compensate for the difference...I believe we have the exact opposite situation today.:(

always rated as a great company for its employees. They offered her the job (a great position) but the salary was no higher than the same kind of position anywhere else in the country. It's hard for many companies to get employees to move there because housing costs are so high.

My SO was offered a job there and I was very enthused about "moving back" he was less so because of the housing costs. When he finally agreed to take the job, we had to turn it down for other reasons (his elderly father was diagnosed with cancer) housing costs were also his concern.

I understand that teachers, nurses and policeman all have a hard time with housing there.

Too bad the big money people got there claws in it...It was PERFECT...and is "near perfect" now, imo.

he's far too practical and always made more money than I did so had more to lose by quitting and moving west. Then the economy just kept getting worse so it became harder and harder to justify. I'd still love to live in the Bay area somewhere but I guess I'd have to win the lottery first. Actually, now that I say that, I think my opinion has changed on that front. If I won the lottery I would move to Hawaii. I fell in love with that state last year when we took our first trip there. I felt like I was home in some weird way. It IS very beautiful, but for me, it's too far from the mainland to feel comfortable actually living there...Nonetheless, it would make an easy place to visit if one lived in California.

As to your feeling a sense of home, there...Yeah..That's how I felt about San Francisco..The "sense of place" some of us have.."The one true place" is an interesting phenomenon on its own.

being home was so intense when I was there. I never expected it either. We went to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday and I knew I would enjoy it (who wouldn't enjoy Hawaii when it's 10 degrees and snowing back home in Chicago?). However, I've never been much of a beach person. I usually prefer redwood forests or mountains. So I expected to feel like "Okay, great, I've seen Hawaii and it was lovely. Now I can cross that off my list." But within a day or two I was hooked. We ended up going back in June, just six months later. I get the chills when I think about it. I get emotional when I see it on tv. If we have past lives, I'm pretty certain I must have been Hawaiian at some point, the feeling was that strong.

But I wouldn't say no to San Francisco. It's my favorite place on the mainland I'd say for sure.

Basically, they increase the profit margin on the meal alone by cutting out the actual cost of the toy itself and sell the toy at actual cost. As long as "cost of included toy" is equal to "cost of separate toy" and simultaneously greater than or equal to "actual cost of toy" then the result is the same price for a Toy and a Happy Meal. No commodity, individual meal or individual toy, is sold below cost by bundling so there are no legal issues.

If I were a fast food restaraunt... that's precisely what I'd do.
And all it requires is price suffling. No actual menu changes.
