Grijalva declares victory in Arizona!

Rep. Grijalva declares victory in Congressional District 7
by Catherine Reagor - Nov. 3, 2010 10:31 AM
The Arizona Republic
.

With one precinct left to report, U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva has declared victory in his bid to keep the Arizona Congressional District 7 seat.

His challenger, political newcomer and Republican Ruth McClung, has not conceded, however.

It's been a tight race between the Tucson Democrat Grijalva and McClung to represent the southern Arizona district. Grijalva gave a victory speech during the wee hours of the morning, his spokesman Adam Sarvana said Wednesday morning.

With all but one precinct reporting, Grijalva was leading with 48.6 percent of the vote to McClung's 45.7 percent. Nearly 3,600 votes separated the two.

2. This is one of the few
who won here in Arizona. Thank goodness it was this man, but considering his area is one of the most Democratic areas and he had this close a race bothers me. I don't know what to think about the Democratic Party in Arizona, because we seem to be almost dead.

5. Yup; they are pretty damn useless. Too many races where no Dem is running,
little support for local races (where it matters most; like Superintendent of Schools), ad nauseum.

4. YESYESYES!!! A little good news for Arizona in an otherwise really dismal
(but typical) election year.

6. LAT: Grijalva's win in Arizona gives liberals something to cheer
Rep. Raul Grijalva's win in Arizona gives liberals something to cheer
The congressman faced a serious challenge from political novice Ruth McClung after he urged a boycott of his state after it passed a tough immigration law. Raul Grijalva held a lead of 2 percentage points Wednesday morning.

By Nicholas Riccardi, Los Angeles Times
November 3, 2010|10:15 a.m.

One bright spot for Democrats on election night: Liberal stalwart Raul Grijalva held onto his congressional seat representing southern Arizona.

Grijalva, who had easily won reelection in the past, got into trouble after urging a boycott of his state once it enacted a tough immigration law in April. After portions of the law were suspended by a federal court judge, he reversed course. But Republican Ruth McClung, a 28-year-old political novice and engineer at a defense contractor, pulled into within striking distance.
