Voice of the Gamecocks, Bob Fulton, has died

LEXINGTON Bob Fulton, the voice of the Gamecocks for almost 50 years, died today at his home in Lexington. He was 89 years old.

Fulton was one of the legendary announcers in college athletics. His career with USC spanned from 1952-1964 and 1967-1995. He worked football, basketball and baseball games for the Gamecocks Sports Network. His career at USC spanned 13 athletics directors, 10 basketball coaches, nine football coaches and 10 university presidents.

Asked about his best memories at USC, Fulton said, “There are so many, but two football games stand out. The first came against Virginia in 1952, my first year at Carolina. Virginia led 14-0 late in the game, then coach Rex Enright put Dick Balka in at quarterback. He led a touchdown drive, then Carolina recovered a fumble on the kickoff and scored again. Finally, the Gamecocks blocked a kick for another TD. That’s 21 points in 1:45 on the game clock.

“The other, in what I consider USC’s biggest win nationally, came against Michigan in 1980. Carolina won 17-14 in Ann Arbor, but the game was really decided on the Friday before. Coach Jim Carlen made a great speech on that Friday and the team went into that stadium loose and ready to play.”
