1. great lake states, plus (2) and (1) are a viable progressive nation.

Urban and rural.

That's how pretty much every vote comes down. Urban areas always go left, and rural areas always go right. There's some crossover, of course (I happen to be left of Marx in rural Alabama, for example), but that's how it generally breaks down overall.
