This wasn't defeat!
Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 02:49 PM by DFab420
Why are so many of us bawling about our defeat at the hands of the republicans?

Did they take the senate? No

Did they take the White House? Pretty sure it's still under Democratic control

Did they take the lesser chamber? Yes, and now when nothing gets through the congress, which was actually passing tons of measures this past 2 years, it will be on the republican heads.

Beltway common knowledge is that when the midterms come up in a post presidential election, whom ever the president's party was, loses seats in the senate and congress. We lost 60 or so congressional seats. There are laws in place to protect against Gerrymandering, THIS IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD!

SO please, if you really think this was a hard hit, then you weren't really ready for the fight to begin with.

Stand proud progressives. Stand proud Democrats. We held the senate. We had a good amount of governorships go our way. Hold your head up high, and walk off the gut shot.

There is still work to be done, and now, at least the scumbags are in the spotlight.

This is not the end, but merely a new beginning. Fight on .

14. I'm not sure you get it.
The Republican win was HUGE, because it included the taking of around 20 state legislatures (not sure we have an accurate count yet).

State legislatures are in charge of redistricting (usually after a census, but varies from state to state, I think).

And guess what those legislatures are gonna do now?

They are going to draw up redistricting plans that will make it more difficult for us to be heard at the polls for YEARS TO COME.

Sorry, but this isn't just about losing the House.

21. Eventually, yes.
But this kind of thing isn't a four-year cycle.

We're easily looking at 10-20.

22. Yes true but
If you look at many of those states, such as FL. and OH. they also have passes legislation, either this election or last. That helps control and protect the process of redistricting.

Gerrymanding is also illegal , and since when did any government movement happen without watchdog groups. What we will need to do is watch these states, and make sure stacking/cracking or any other type of vote manipulation doesn't take place.

25. Gerrymandering and redistricting are not the same.
And states CAN redistrict in such a way to effectively minimize the impact of the opposing party.

That is precisely what Tom Delay & Friends did in Texas. Legally.
