Executive Superpower
Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 03:30 PM by McCamy Taylor
Stalemate. Republicans in the House. Democrats in the Senate. Obama won’t have to use that veto pen very often---any truly whacked out right wing legislation that originates in the House will be DOA in the Senate. Their only real power will be the power of the purse strings, and though GOPers may talk big, there’s no way they will make the mistake of Newt and shut down the federal government. Darrel Issa is their best chance for raising hell. Eventually, he will investigate the President’s birth certificate---“because the voters demand it”---with the goal of getting a Special Prosecutor appointed who will try to get Obama on a witness stand so that he can question him about irrelevant matters. I am betting that the “youthful drug use” will be the subject of right wing scrutiny, since we now know that the American public does not give a fuck who their politicians are fucking, but over half of Californians who bother to vote would prefer that we “Just say no” to weed.

Mr. President, did you smoke marijuana on October 1, 1979 at a Halloween party in Los Angeles? No? Well, we have a witness, TJ, currently serving a life sentence for drug trafficking who says he was there with you on October 31, 1979 and he saw you smoke marijuana. Perjury!

In their dreams. Won’t be a special prosecutor this time around. No way Holder will be allowed to make the mistakes of Janet Reno. This time they will have to try the President in the court of public opinion, lots of corporate money---some of it foreign—going straight into the hands of reporters who will dish out the latest GOP dirt as if it is gospel truth. Anonymously funded political attack ads from guys have studied Birth of a Nation and know just how to make a Black man seem scary.

Lots of sound and fury signifying nothing.

If anything is going to get done---besides the next presidential election campaign which will probably kick off some time this week---if any meaningful action is going to come out of Washington, it will have to originate in the executive branch. Can Obama forget all that legislative training and start thinking executive powers? Can he turn into a superhero president? It isn’t too late to rally the base---and provide some coattails for Democrats in 2012. But he will have to change his style from “bipartisan” to something a little more confrontational before he can

Re-establish the "Fairness Doctrine".

Bring the troops home from Afghanistan.

Prosecute voting rights violations.

Cut drug prices for Americans by having the FDA ok imports.

Prosecute banksters who throw people out of their homes illegally.

Appoint a special prosecutor to investigate foreign money in U.S. elections.

Make Halliburton give back money that was paid for shoddy---and lethal---work in Iraq.

End the two year waiting period that people with medical disabilities face before they can get Medicare.

No government contracts for companies which outsource.

Leap tall buildings in a single bound.

3. love the list -- but it ain't gonna happen.
It would require someone ready to fight. And this administration knows how to roll over, but has no fight. They only kick their supporters.

4. I think you have hit the problem with a senator
becoming President. I'm afraid his performance is more like he was the super senator, with powers to negotiate and bargain and long arms to reach across the aisle. I wonder if those who learned their national politics in the Senate really know about how to wield the executive branch of the government.

You may be right that if anything gets done, it will have to originate in the WH and be herded, pushed, and shouted through. Both houses of congress were worth very little for the last two years. Now they are worth less, or worthless.
