Don't be anxious if Rossi overtakes Murray today
Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 05:28 PM by Bumblebee
It would be only temporary, although he will probably ask Murray to concede on the spot :-)

Murray campaign confident even if Rossi pulls ahead today

Posted by Jim Brunner

Democratic U.S. Sen. Patty Murray's campaign is preparing supporters for a possible tightening of her race against Republican Dino Rossi as more ballots are counted today.

Murray's deputy campaign manager, Alex Glass, said she won't be shocked if Murray falls slightly behind Rossi this afternoon. That's because King County is only expected to count 45,000 ballots, which may be dwarfed by new totals from other counties. (Spokane County alone will count 30,000.)

In a new memo on the state of the race, Jeff Bjornstad, Murray's campaign manager, predicted Rossi will lose even if he appears to surge today.

2. Didn't her wn results take a long time last election too?
I think I remember it took longer than expected then too.

4. No, she was far ahead, if I remember correctly, and we did not vote by mail yet.
It was Rossi versus Gregoire for governor in 2004 that took forever plus a recount.

3. Rossi is a real piece of...work
He fought what seemed like forever when he lost the race for Governor. The sense of republican entitlement and bullying is strong with that one.

6. As much as I hate being fair to Rossi, in that one he was actually ahead, and
it was Gregoire, thank god, who insisted on the recount. And we all participated standing guard over the ballots!

10. Thanks for the refresher
I was new to Washington state when Gregoire defeated him. Nice to know that Gregoire did not cave and stood her ground. I'm sure Patty will follow her lead if it happens this time around. As you said she will probably win by a slight margin but at this point a win is a win. The only problem I have with her winning by a slight margin is that Rossi will take it as positive. Meaning the creep will probably be back.

5. Thank you
I have not watched the news today and was wondering where she stood. I always say until King county is completely counted that there is no need to worry. King county always pulls through. Hubby said that Dino is barely winning Mason county which is rural and pretty conservative. When I heard that it gave me some hope that she will pull this off. I hope the creep goes away forever after this. It makes me smile to know that he is going to be defeated once again by a strong woman. Mostly because of his anti choice position. Go Patty!

9. He'll be back.
If he doesn't win this one you can count on him running in 2012 for something.

11. I could not sleep last night either. I was in shock, and spent the whole
night checking on Colorado, hoping to see at least some good news so that I could fall asleep. That one was, of course, not totally resolved till today. It is true that all the anti-tax initiatives that passed so overwhelmingly make you wonder what kind of a crowd was it trying to vote in great numbers late Tuesday afternoon. She is usually ahead by more that 62% in King, so there are some other voters mixed in there, for sure. But Rossi has to be 40+% in King to have a chance, plus he is not much ahead in other big counties, when he is ahead, probably because he was not endorsed by the teabagger whom he defeated -- so it should be fine.

13. One of the posters
In the Washington forum laid it out about the anti-tax initiatives. I have to hand it to them because those ads were devastating. I also wonder if people were voting against those initiatives out of fear because of the economy. At any rate Washington state progressives need to work hard in 2012 to defeat Rossi by more than a couple of points. I hope that people will get Rossi fatigue and look the other way next time around.

14. The pro-tax people, including Bill Gates Sr., did not do a good job
explaining it and allaying people's fear. Very poorly planned and carried out. Plus other taxes that the legislature had voted in this past year were now voted against. We are going to be in a very dire state when it comes to social services, education, et al. And one of the chambers may flip to GOP as well. Not great.

12. Whoa, I would have panicked! I STILL hope it doesn't happen, even temporarily,
but it was good of Murray (and you!) to prepare us. Thanks!

18. Here's Sharkansky's blog on this race who was a Republican blogger on the Gregoire/Rossi race

Here's what he puts out as a letter from Rossi's campaign...

Rossi Camp Update On The Rossi-Murray Race

Here's an email from his campaign manager, Pat Shortridge:

This evening's returns indicate this election is as close as many predicted, in that it is too close to call. A few points to remember as you examine returns:

* Historically in Washington, the Republican candidates improve their percentages in each county in votes counted after Election Day, usually improving their margins by 2 to 3 percentage points.
* King County, which is providing most of Sen. Murray's margin, accounts for 30.7% of all registered voters in the state. According to County Election reports, King County only has 26.7% of the remaining ballots left to count. The rest of the state, where Rossi has a comfortable lead, will count proportionately more ballots post-Election Day.
* Spokane County, where Rossi is currently in the lead by more than 50%, still has at least 21.6% of the remaining ballots left to process, with more coming in.
* Rossi is currently leading in Pierce County by nearly 2,500 votes
* According to the Secretary of State, there are still over 508,000 estimated ballots left to process statewide.

Again, we will know more over the next several days as ballots continue to come in and counties continue to count. We are confident that the margins we are seeing throughout Washington State, combined with the state legislative victories, will put Dino Rossi ahead by an overwhelming margin.

For the record: I have not checked any of Shortridge's points, though I should add that I don't see any that are obviously wrong.

As I write, Murray has a lead of 14,005 votes. You can look at the results here, as the ballots come in and are counted. There is a good chance that we'll have an automatic recount in this race.
