WASHINGTON – A chastened President Barack Obama signaled a new willingness to yield to Republican demands on tax cuts and jettisoned a key energy priority on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after he and fellow Democrats absorbed election losses so severe he called them a shellacking.

Sounding more conciliatory than in the past, the president said he was open to compromise with Republicans on their demand for an extension of all of the Bush-era tax cuts due to expire on Jan. 1, including those that apply to upper-income earners.

Obama also virtually abandoned legislation, hopelessly stalled in the Senate, that includes economic incentives to reduce carbon emissions from power plants, vehicles and other sources.

Now is the time for compromising!! (So were 2008 and 2009 -- we have to reach across the aisle and everything in the Senate requires 60 votes!!)

He omitted mention of his campaign-long insistence that tax cuts be permitted to expire on upper-income families. The issue produced pre-election skirmishes in Congress and frequent disagreement during the campaign.

That he didn't say something in what basically was a generalized press conference to make some concilatory noises? That's their evidence?

My only point is we need to read these AP stories critically - they made a conscious decision a few years ago to start editorializing in their news stories, This was done under Ron Fournier who headed the political bureau. He interviewed for a job on the McCain campaign and was friendly with Karl Rove. He's gone now but they are still following his model in political reporting.

Obama has been too conciliatory for the past two years IMO, he doesn't need to be more so under the current circumstances.

And it's also my opinion that the Associated Press consistently slants its coverage to belittle Democrats and their policies.
