Which senators are up for election in 2012?

Anybody have a source for that info? (Of course we know that all of the House will be up for election again next time.)

Maybe we could get ready to contribute to them sooner, since us small donors can't do as much in a short time at the last minute. Even if there's no committee formed yet, we could put it aside ourselves, and at least plan who we'll want to contribute to. I for one, donate to some senators who aren't from my state, as others do too. Also we could start on researching the senators we need to oppose. (I'm thinking of how much stuff DU dug up on Palin in '08, which was pretty remarkable.)

Anyhow... anybody have a link for the 2012 senators?

The bad news for the Democrats is that this is just the beginning of the bad news. Because Republicans picked up several key governorships and more than 19 state legislative chambers, Republicans will control much of redistricting – the redrawing of congressional and state legislative lines – in states such as Texas, which will gain four seats, and Ohio and Pennsylvania and Wisconsin and Michigan, which will lose seats. So, we can add between 15 and 20 Republican House seats to the Republican majority elected on 2 November because of the coming redistricting. This additional haul of congressional seats begins in 2012 and will last a decade, until the next redistricting in 2022.

The Republicans have not just won the House; they have won it for a decade.

And the news from the Senate is not better for the Democrats. Two years from now, in 2012, there will be 33 senators up for re-election. Twenty-three will be Democrats and only 10 will be Republicans. And one counts eight Democrats in potentially vulnerable states, compared to perhaps one Republican. Two years after that, in 2014, there will be 20 Democrats up for re-election and only 13 Republicans. One Republican hails from a blue state (Maine), and some nine Democrats will run in Republican-trending states.

So, Republicans will win a majority in the Senate in 2012, and hope to have fully 60 seats – enough to overcome any filibuster after the 2014 election.

20. It could be that these teabaggers

who were just elected turn out to be the downfall of the GOP. The establishment republicans are in a real bind and have to follow their wishes which are dangerous (like shutting down the government and defaulting on debt). They are most certainly going to overstep some boundaries that could very well turn people out to vote D next time after they see how nuts they are and what cutting the deficit and not raising any taxes on the wealthy really means.

8. The Early MSM Meme . . .

The early MSM meme, which I'm surprised I haven't seen yet (give it a few more days), will be that the map is "terrible" for Democrats because the Democrats will be defending 21 seats (actually 23 if you count Sanders and Lieberman) and the Thugs 10.

However, out of that group of 23, there are only a few danger spots. Brown in Ohio will get a challenge from some nutbag. Tester in Montana, ditto. Same for Webb in Virginia. Other than that, you're pretty stretched to find vulnerable Democrats in those that are up. As a bonus, Lieberman will be defeated and replaced with a real Democrat.

On the Republican side, they have just as many problems. Scott Brown in Massachusetts is a goner. Olympia Snowe in Maine will be primaried by a teabagger. Kyl in Arizona may meet the same fate. Finally, Ensign of Nevada might be forced from office before the election; if not, his seat is a prime pickup opportunity, particularly for a candidate with excellent Latino outreach (which is how Reid won).

It's actually going to be - - at this point - - a fairly boring Senate election. And Democrats should retain the majority, and maybe even add to it by a seat or two.
