Obama Says He Is Open to Compromise With Victorious Republicans
By Nicholas Johnston and James Rowley - Nov 3, 2010 4:07 PM CT

U.S. President Barack Obama said voters gave him a “shellacking” in yesterday’s elections because they want both parties to work together, as victorious Republicans called on Democrats to “pivot in a different direction.”

House Minority Leader John Boehner, a Republican who will likely become speaker in January, and Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell said at a news conference today they hope Obama and congressional Democrats will heed voters’ desire that they change course and find bipartisan solutions to growing government debt and persistent high unemployment.

Obama, at a White House press conference shortly afterward, said he heard the voice of “frustrated” voters unhappy about high unemployment, slow economic growth and concerned about government “overreach” into their lives.

“What I think the American people are expecting and what we owe them is to focus on those issues that affect their jobs, their security and their future,” Obama said. “I’ve been willing to compromise in the past, and I’m going to be willing to compromise going forward, on a whole range of issues.”

13. You can't compromise between rational and insanity.
Republican parties aren't just amoral--they are factually incorrect: war abroad will make us safer at home, same-sex marriage will destroy kids, tax cuts for the rich will help average Americans.

You can't compromise between reasonable and irrational. Being a little bit irrational is never good national policy.

10. Mhm,
President Obama seems determined to screw his party over in 2012. His compromising left and right will do nothing but show the country he's more concerned with poll numbers and not about a progressive base.

4. I'm trying to think here
What's that definition of insanity again? You know the one about doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results?

Oh, I think that's it.

28. The Scorpion and the Frog
Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 09:31 PM by iamjoy
So, a scorpion comes up to a river and wants to cross. But of course, the scorpion can't swim. Well, Scorpion sees a frog there and asks, "Hey Frog, will you carry me across the river on your back?" And Frog says, "No, you'll sting me and I'll die." Scorpion responds, "Why would I do that, if I sting you and you die, I'll drown." So Frog thinks this kind of makes sense, takes Scorpion on his back and starts to swim across the river. When they are halfway across, Scorpion stings Frog. With his last breath, Frog cries out, "Why did you do that? Now we both die." Scorpion replies, "It's my nature."

Only Republicans aren't as dumb as Scorpion, they wait until they are at the other side to sting Frog.

14. So what? Whaddya expect the POTUS to say at a post-midterm press conference?
Meanwhile, President Obama has clearly signalled via the WH that he would not hesitate to use his veto pen. But let's all ignore that and get OUTRAGED AT OBAMA AGAIN!!!!!!!!

23. He did clearly, in a nuanced way. Read the transcript of his press conference.
Also, the WH sent out a press release today that said he would veto any effort on the part of Republicans to have HCR modified or repealed.

30. "nuance"
How about a sledgehammer?

You're going to use "nuance" with the chest-thumping, giddy Republicans?

Give me a break. See where all this pussyfooting has left us?

Screwed.

Yeah, the President will veto stuff. That doesn't say much for his Presidency to advance his agenda. It just puts him on defense.

25. Mr. President, I supported you then and still do...
and I understand the need for you to politically sound *open* to the new majority in the House (Not the ONLY people in the House, mind you and not the majority in the Senate...NOR commanding the White House....just the majority in the House)
but COMPROMISE with these blowhard bullshitters is NOT possible. IS NOT POSSIBLE. ENOUGH!

They have already ignored the real reasons for the shift in voting (it is historically accurate to say that midterm elections generally DO swing to the other party).
They don't have any interest in the polls or *survey says* moments about ANYTHING any voters said about why they voted the way they did.
They have NO INTEREST in meeting anyone half way but especially not YOU.
They do not CARE what the people really want, *the people's desire* means shit to them. THEY want you to fail, horribly.
They are repulsive obstructionists...and my guess is that most of them are souless as well.
They are saturated with their own self serving powers and reek of their own hate.

To quote a favorite fictional hero of mine *The time for half measures and talk is over.*

FIGHT THEM.
FIGHT.
Damn it.
DAMN IT...FIGHT THEM.

(taking off my Gladiator armor now)

<facepalm>

Or Neville Chamberlain.

Good God, Mr. President, stand and fight. Stop rolling over!

And sorry to insult President Carter. Clinton, not so much.

Jesus H. Christ, what more does it take for someone to stand up against these bully Republican bastards. Instead, President Obama caves.

How many times do you have to get kicked in the head before you stand and fight?

:(

35. He didn't say he "will" compromise, only that he's "willing to" compromise.
But how do you compromise with a group of people who refuse to compromise? You can't. You can only stand your ground or capitulate.
