Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 11:08 PM by BrentWil
For me, it would be a structural changes. For example, the way we draw Congressional districts is ridicules. A Constitutional amendment that allowed an apolitical process to draw districts that make sense and stopped gerrymandering would be a huge plus. That way, you would not get these extreme districts. I would also be with a Constitutional amendment that gave the President a line-item veto.

Nothing is going to happen with Health Care or any really "hot" issue. I think the way to go is to think what is structurally wrong with our system.

1. Yeah, they could pass a binding resolution sending themselves to hell.
Short of that, no.

If they REALLY want to see cooperation from someone like me.

6. Term Limits
I've had it with these Old Farts who go to Congress and never leave.

And before anyone says it, NO, I do not trust the voters. They are too stupid to know what is best for them.

7. They wouldn't propose it, but campaign finance reform of some kind might get support
It sounds ridiculous, but I'm quite serious. If the Democrats can present it in such a way as to exert political pressure, we could get some defections.

11. THey might...
But they would want to go with a less regulated system where you simply have transparency, over actually trying to control the money. I actually think it would work better.

14. Pretty sure they'd want that in reverse; less transparency, more control.
That way, they could conveniently ignore the regulations while pinning Dems up against the wall with them. It's how they roll.

Which neither of the corporate parties in thrall to the MIC will do.

for their domestic and international crimes and their constitutional crimes. Short of that, they can rot in hell (and if there is a God as they say, they will).

18. I hope you rethink your position on the line item veto.
This would transfer huge power to the president, Democratic or Republican, which would really change the balance of power arranged in the constitution. When Congress hashes out a bill, it usually is a compromise that comes from a give and take by the various constituencies. If the president could pick and choose what he wants or doesn't, it is not unlike W's "Signing statements." There would be no point in negotiating anything if your side's parts could be eliminated by veto, so things would shortly come to a stop, even more than in the present deplorable situation.

I don't think they'll be showing up with a non partisan redistricting plan but I'd talk to them about simplifying the tax code with the intent not to change the amount of revenue raised or even the distribution of costs and benefits, but to cut down on the crazy complexities of the present code and time consuming filing necessary. I think there has been some interest in this by a few republicans.

20. Well...
I would structure it so that Congress would have a majority vote on the bill again and have a chance to overturn each line-item with a 2/3rd majority. If COngress does not like the bill, they can reject it.

However, I think it would be a check on the spending power of Congress and is needed.

19. Repeal the $500 billion spending increase passed by Republican Congress and signed into law by Bush
Medicare Part D.

All this talk about repealing Health Care Reform, but no peep about Medicare Part D. How about, first, you repeal the spending that you passed yourself? Then maybe I'd believe that you really are "reborn" fiscal conservatives and not the same-old GOP.

At least Health Care Reform was balanced with tax increases and spending cuts. Was Medicare Part D even paid for with its own tax increases/spending cuts?

21. Reminds me of Broadcast News
Where a longtime staffer is getting laid off, and the exec says something like, "Please let me know if there's anything I can do."

The guy replies, "Well, I certainly hope you'll die soon." The exec's secretary has to stifle her laughter.

I'd settle for them acting at least partly sane.

Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 11:53 PM by belpejic
Should be a nonpartisan issue, particularly since there are plenty of good reasons to do it without considering climate change. For example, such policies could be perfectly reasonably pitched as a national security issue (ie, less reliance on foreign oil) or as international industrial and technological competitiveness issues (ie, China and Germany, to name a few, are kicking our asses).

23. How about closing our boarders to unfair goods
Look Democrats are more than willing to find common ground. So I think we can ignore the idea THEY WANT TO FIND COMMON GROUND.

1)Dems would be more than happy to cut Abortions in this country by increasing sex education, increased access to condoms, increased funding of adoption programs, increased aid to single mothers... Republicans never, ever bite on measure that would really lower the abortion rate, no matter how many times we offer. But yeah if they wanted to work with Dems no doubt a lot could get done the DU wouldn't mind.

2)Heck I can't find a Republican voter that likes our trade policies yet I can't find a Republican politician that doesn't... hmm. There certain common ground for more fair trade policies.

3)Republicans are afraid of deficit, we are afraid of deficit. How about raising the business and rich tax rate and we will allow the cutting of certain areas of the budget like the two wars. The wars that both party voters dislike.
