Republican gains:
House +58
Senate +6
(these numbers may change as too close to call races pan out, if anything they will go upward)

Comparatively:
..............H........S
1934.....+9.....+9
1938.....-71.....-6
1942.....-55.....-9
1946.....-45.....-12
1950.....-29..... -6
1954.....-18.....-1
1958.....-48.....-13
1962.....-4.......+3
1966.....-47.....-4
1970.....-12.....+2
1974.....-48.....-5
1978.....-15.....-3
1982.....-26.....+1
1986.....-5.......-8
1990.....-8.......-1
1994.....-52.....-8
1998.....+5......0
2002.....+8......+2
2006.....-30.....-6

the all time highs:
House:
1938 - 71 seats lost in the midterm
Senate:
1958 - 13 seats lost in the midterm

where does this one rank?

House:
#2 all time (behind 1938)

Senate:
Tied for 4th (behind 1958, 1946, 1942 and tied with 1986 and 1990)

What does this mean? Well 1st off, this is an old fashioned ass kicking, especially when you factor in:

State legislative branches changing hands: 13 legislatures and 6 or 7 state senates (not sure how to count NY)

Governors net gain of 8 for the republicans.

Second, President Obama is going to have some significant crow to eat and fence mending after:

Stating:
"Republicans they had to take the 'back seat'"

"I won. So I think on that one, I trump you."

Acting:
"slapped the table," wagged his finger and scolded him (Boehner, the presumptive speaker of the house) at a recent White House meeting.

Plus the gusts of hot air over the summer and leading up to the election assailing John Boehner.

and it'll be no wonder why the Republicans won't reach across the aisle. They "won" so what's good for the goose is good for the gander.
