My adult daughter said that all the buzz among boomers who did not vote is that they are pissed
that the republicans are back in office. She let them have it for not voting. They are swearing that they will be there in 2012. This continues to prove that the rethugs have no mandate. They just slipped in because lazy people did not go to the polls.

1. Boomers are old enough to know that it would happen if they didn't vote.
No excuses for their being "lazy".

royally po'd that Branstad found his way back into the state house. Guess what? They didn't vote this time. My husband told them that they forfeited their right to complain and he didn't want to hear anything from them.

BTW, I've also read reports that the youth couldn't be counted on to get their asses out to vote either.

32. Don't blame the electorate
When you lose you have to look in the mirror for the blame. If you can't clarify and frame the issues so that people care enough to vote then you will lose. Young people are probably better than they were in my generation (1948). Admit that we are engaged in warfare with a powerful enemy who controls all of the money and therefore all of the media. They are pros at exploiting bigotry, selfishness, and giving simple meaningless answers to complicated problems. They have geniuses on Madison Avenue working for them who can bend public opinion to their will.

4. This is why we should have mandatory voting with a financial penalty...
It works to make almost perfect attendance (95%) in Australia.

26. absolutely
it works. And what it does is make it just about impossible to steal elections. It also gets young people voting in a regular way. That in itself is reason for it.

Australians are not downtrodden and disenfranchised. They wouldn't put up with it.

and were "radical" only when threatened with the draft. After tha draft was over, they reverted to conservative lazy self serving assholes and have changed little since.
If you are relying on the "boomer vote" to save the Democrats for total destruction in 2012, you better start applying for Canadian citizenship now to avoid the rush in 2013.

We are overall a generation of spoiled, conservative punks who have no integrity and a lot of misplaced arrogance.
By 2012, half of them will be republicans anyway.

I was born in 1947, so I am one.

8. 1949 here and that's why I think it would
be a good idea to bring back the draft. It would get their fucking attention off bullshit texting, video games and whatever the hell else some of them are doing.

Big Props to all those of the younger generation who are out there making a difference and caring about the future of the world and their children and us old Boomers. We :applause: you!

9. God I'm so glad a boomer is confirming what I've been saying for years!
The Boomers are the generation that did every drug under the sun but are pushing "no tolerance" drug policies in schools and workplaces.

Boomers had their "free love" but are now pushing abstinence-only sex ed.

Yes, there are exceptions, and plenty of Boomers on DU. But such exceptions are NOT the majority of Boomers, thank you very much.

23. That's a damn shame
guess for some their convictions were shallow.

I think I became even more liberal as I got older. When my grandaughter was in her mid-teens I suspected she might be having sex and told her Mom that she may want to have a talk with here and see what type of birth control her dr. felt would be appropriate for age and health.

I may not have thought that when I was a teen ager. For me if I could get them, yes. At that time I don't think I would have thought if I have a granddaughter someday and she's having sex, talk honestly and openly and if she is and wants bc - get it.

12. That someone is a boomer says nothing about them
other than the age group in which they fall. Boomers, like every other age-based demographic segment, are made up of the full range of political leanings, religious beliefs, purchasing habits and everything else that can be measured. You cannot say anything accurate about anyone, just based on his or her age group.

About half of Boomers are Democrats. About half are Republicans. They're almost equal in numbers. Some vote. Some do not. Just like every other age group.

Age is an indication of nothing but age.

Thank you for listening.

13. I would question "the buzz", how much and what it really means and its accuracy.
All different kinds of people do not vote in every election so I don't know how any extrapolation can be made with any particular group not voting based up the buzz.

18. Somebody yesterday said it best:
"The House got punished for what the Senate has been doing." People were angry about all the bills that got watered down to the point of vanishing when they got to the Senate. They couldn't punish the Senate--too few were up for re election--so they punished the House.

It's notable that 50% of the Blue Dogs lost, while fewer than 25% of progressives lost.

People who vote are paying minimal attention. The Senate killed any hope for real change in the direction this country has been taking for the last 40 years, so they either sat this one out or cast a revenge vote for the party that made the mess in the first place. No, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense until you realize how angry people are. That makes them ornery.

The party has two years to form a coherent message. I hope they manage to do so. If not, say hello to another president Bush.

21. How about we just complain about the PEOPLE
who didn't vote and not worry about their ages? I am a boomer. I voted. So did all my friends. My kids are 26-31. They voted. So did all their friends.

Next time we GOTV, we visit all the people of all ages and get them to vote. Actually, I did that this time. I will do it again.

22. Both sides are correct
I found many boomers that were not going to vote.

One said that he was not going to vote because
he did not want to get called for jury duty
another said he was not going to vote because
there was no one that had the values he believed in.

Some others too drunk to care, others saying that
they do not do politics. A sad state this country is in.

24. Exactly!
Not enough people pay attention or get off their keesters to vote.

Obama also needs to do a better job of making sure people know about his accomplishments--the biggest legislative success since FDR but few people know that 2/3rds of the stimulus was a tax cut for 95 percent of American families.

He's gotta do like what Clinton and other presidents have done---you pass a bill or introduce a program and hit the road for weeks, selling it and reminding people of what you've done.

In this short attention span country, where not enough people really know what's going on, that's more important than ever.

And the Rethuglicans will never let a squeaker victory get in the way of their mandate. They won and that's all they care about. The details are not important to them.
