Senator Mitch McConnell, the minority leader, said that ousting President Obama is the “only way” to advance the Republican agenda in an impassioned — and confrontational — speech on Thursday.

“If our primary legislative goals are to repeal and replace the health spending bill, to end the bailouts, cut spending and shrink the size and scope of government, the only way to do all these things it is to put someone in the White House who won’t veto any of these things,” Mr. McConnell said in a speech to the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank in Washington, according to prepared remarks. “We can hope the president will start listening to the electorate after Tuesday’s election. But we can’t plan on it.”

Mr. McConnell faced a barrage of criticism last week for declaring that making Mr. Obama a one-term president would be his party’s top priority if they took the majority. Democrats — and the president himself, who devoted his pre-election weekly national address to the comments — said it was a sign that there would be no compromising with Republicans in charge.

Even though leaders of both parties pledged on Wednesday to work together, Mr. McConnell sounded anything but conciliatory on Thursday and said that Republicans would chip away at the health care bill bit-by-bit until 2012.

I like President Obama. I voted for him. I want him to succeed. I am disappointed with how things have turned out for him and the country. I stand behind everything that he has done so far, but am disappointed that he just does not get the fact that his opposition in Washington and throughout the country don’t want to work together with him for anything, and wish for and work for his failure even at the expense of America suffering more. Mitch McConnell has said he only wants to work toward President Obama not getting a second term, in essence the Rush Limbaugh “I hope he fails” strategy. Why should he continue to reach out to these people? It is abundantly clear they have no intention of working with him. My opinion is: If the repukes think Obama “rammed health care down their throats” that the President should have rammed more things down their throats and really give them something to complain about. Do you think that anyone would have ever been allowed to carry sidearms into a rally or town hall with Bush/Cheney or brandish them in a parade? Why should it be ok now?

If our President, who I proudly voted for and do want to succeed does not grow a pair of balls soon and stand up to the opposition, I would like for someone else to run against him in the primary. I want the country to move forward more than I care about how and who is in the White House. I voted for the hope and change and was damned proud of my vote, who it was for and what it stood for. I still like this President as a person, but I admit-I have total buyer’s remorse for how this has worked out-unless he starts busting some bold moves and stands up to the rethuggery and teajadists. I'd rather not witness him being humiliated by these ass hats on a daily basis while America continues to circle the drain. Part of the hope and change would have been to NOT take impeachment off the table prior to Obama's arrival and also to investigate and prosecute any/all of the war crimes of BushCo. The righties make a big deal of how far forward the President "bows down" to other foreign dignitaries. I am more angry with how he seems to capitulate and bend over for the repukes or not fight back. I'm not buying this whole "he's playing 3d chess while they are playing checkers" B.S. You know what, though? I think he isn't delusional. He is like Tom Delay, the "Hammer" or the "Exterminator" and whatever other names Delay got while in the House. All of these "top" Republicans want to cut every social safety net program they can but they couldn't say that during the election process. They used only their code words of "cut taxes" and a good proportion of the electorate bought into it. There's no reason a 75 year old would want Social Security, Medicare, etc., cut. But if you phrase it as "cut taxes" the people buy into it.

Scene 1: Democrats elect a president they think will govern according to the bedrock principles of their party: The New Deal, regulating powerful interests so that they don't unfairly hurt/burden average people, civil liberties, and protection of the environment.

Scene 2: The opposition party becomes unhinged from the very beginning. Using their control of the media, they get their followers to become frenzied with wild accusations. No one is paying attention to issues because the repubs have successfully alters people's perceptions of reality, so much so that some idiot flew his plane into the White House to protest.

Scene 3: Dems loose the House during the midterms. Repubs continue pushing paranoid delusional fantasies to keep everyone, including the media, worked up over nothing. Now even Democratic voters are not paying close attention to policies because their every waking moment is spent defending the president from the wildly delusional accusations and assaults.

Scene 4: Democratic president then goes about governing from the right: joins the war on the poor, repeals Glass-Steagall Act, pushes through NAFTA.
