Citizens United effect kicks into gear - the most expensive midterms in history. By far.
Outside money nearly matched the last presidential cycle:

Liberal interests were outspent 2-1:

-----------

Interesting factoid: 32 candidates spent $1+ million of their own fortunes. Only 4 won.

Also, while Meg Whitman's expenditure ($160m) is breathtaking, Linda McMahon ($46.6m) is the cost-per-vote champ by a mile: Nearly $100 each.

1. Tusdeay night, Amy said $3 BILLION were spent on teevee ads
but I don't know what her source was.

3. Aiyiyi!
Right or wrong, that it's not implausible makes my skin crawl. Mercantile "democracy" is an ugly obscenity.

4. The only good thing about this is separating plutocrats from their cash
because people aren't buying the conservative message all that much any more. The GOP got in this time not because people like them but because people are angry at the Democrats for conceding too much to them.

The plutocracy is going to run into the law of diminishing returns--the more they squander on elections, the less in overall gains those elections will net them.

5. Shit, I hope so
Still, it might be a while coming, since they can afford the triple-price premium for each vote.

This is going to turn the mean, stupid, and ugly up past 11 next election. Jesus Godzilla Christ, save us.

6. Consider the cautionary tale of Meg Whitman
who sacrificed at least 10% of her net worth to lose an election. I have a feeling this is going to be the pattern, not the exception.

Most people are sick and tired of the constant mudball throwing. It's not working as well as it used to. The mud is sticking to the throwers these days.

7. Wait till you see the $ they spend in 2012!
The Republican majority on SCOTUS has pretty much insured that corporations will outspend us 10:1 in the next election. And by 2012, who's gonna have any discretionary money available for politics? Oh, and we'll now have year round political commercials that will demonize whatever is left of the Democratic Party and our agenda. I've never been so pessimistic about this country's future...and I've been voting for 38 years.
