My son is gay
Edited on Thu Nov-04-10 12:30 PM by charlie and algernon
Or he’s not. I don’t care. He is still my son. And he is 5. And I am his mother. And if you have a problem with anything mentioned above, I don’t want to know you.

I have gone back and forth on whether I wanted to post something more in-depth about my sweet boy and his choice of Halloween costume. Or more specifically, the reactions to it. I figure if I’m still irked by it a few days later, I may as well go ahead and post my thoughts.

Here are the facts that lead up to my rant:

1. My son is 5 and goes to a church preschool.
2. He has loved Scooby Doo since developing the ability and attention span to sit still long enough to watch it.
3. Halloween is a holiday and its main focus is wearing a costume.
4. My son’s school had the kids dress up, do a little parade, and then change out of costumes for the rest of the party.
5. Boo’s best friend is a little girl
6. Boo has an older sister
7. Boo spends most of his time with me.
8. I am a woman.
9. I am Boo’s mother, not you.

So a few weeks before Halloween, Boo decides he wants to be Daphne from Scooby Doo, along with his best friend E. He had dressed as Scooby a couple of years ago. I was hesitant to make the purchase, not because it was a cross gendered situation, but because 5 year olds have a tendency to change their minds. After requesting a couple of more times, I said sure and placed the order. He flipped out when it arrived. It was perfect.

She should win The Mom of the Decade Award. :toast:

1. At least he's watching a good show
unlike my little cousins who watch the trippiest shows I've ever seen and these shows are made for kids.

19. LOL
You mean like Hey Gabba Gabba???

I spent years following the Dead, Phish and moe. Nothing I saw on acid etc compares to that show. The writers etc must be former trippers...

2. My youngest son dressed as a queen when he was 4
My dear mom made his a robe. We got a crown and specter and he went to preschool and trick or treated as a queen.
Looks of funny looks even in liberal parts of NY.

We had just taught him to play chess and he loved the game and the cool queen power.

6. That makes sense
The king is limited and boring, moving only one square at a time, needing to be protected by a row of pawns and a rook in most openings. What kid in his right mind would want that?

loved the article, the pic all of it. My grandson was a fairy princess when he was 4. He wanted to dress like his sister who was 7.

He's 15 now and the girls just won't leave him alone and his hormones are raging. I hope I don't become a Great Grandmother before my time. :scared:

If he were gay that would be fine with me too. I have 2 gay women and 1 gay man in my family. As Joy Beher is fond of saying, 'so what, who cares?'

I copied your squirrel pic. Must have 30 of that lil sucker.

edit: typo

5. Most moms are in denial at that stage
I agree that you have to be a pretty special person to spot what's going on and be perfectly OK with it. She just needs to realize that he can get away with drag now, but three years from now it'll put him into the hospital. Yeah, gay bashing starts young these days.

I hope her kid grows up healthy and sane. With a mom like that, he's got a better chance than most.

she's reacting to the reactions of the other parents. The point she's making is that she doesn't give a rats ass what her son is. She's going to support and love him no matter what he does or wears.

28. I was thinking more transgendered than gay, in this instance, but
it is still a positive story that the mother is supportive and affirming to him no matter what. Still, it is a good thing that she is being as supportive as she can be. Transgendered people face a lot of mean, nasty people in this world too.

I made sure to put the article in the block quotes so people didn't think I was the one who wrote this. I thought it was a great post and am sharing it with DU.

14. When I was his age, I wanted to be a cowboy
Only, I'm female. And, I didn't want to be a cowgirl. The sad thing is, nobody 45 years ago even questioned that, like they do with this little boy in this day and age. What a shame that people project their sexual hang-ups on little kids, who are utterly clueless about the whole thing.

I'm even more sad that this boy didn't want to be Velma, the smart, geeky one. ;-)

17. My daughter, who was in 3rd grade last year...
...would periodically come home to tell me that "Jacob" wore his
tutu again today.

The first time she told me about it, I said, "Oh, that's cool. He
must love pink." I didn't react like it was a big thing.

She finds it intriguing enough to tell me about it and comment on
it--but it's no big deal to her now.

Apparently, there is a little boy who periodically wants to wear
a pink tutu over his clothes at school. The school or his teacher
never says anything, and from what I hear "Jacob" is thrilled that
he gets to do this.

Why not?

18. My grandsons and granddaughters have a large cedar chest
in which there parents have deposited many dressup items. My favorite picture of my oldest grand son has him in a musclebound superhero costume with a pink tutu over top and a tiara with a pair of glitter antenna and holding a magic wand. Those kids dress up in every variation of gender and critter you could think of. The 5 yr old ( a girl) is the best darned swashbuckler with ladybug wings you'll ever find on this planet.

I told my wife, I can't imagine not loving my son or daughter regardless of what they are born to be. As long as they're happy and free being what universe intended for them to be, it's fine by me.

26. Absolutely SPOT ON!!
I love my 2 boys to pieces and I don't give a damn who they want to fall in love with.

As long as it makes them happy, I am all for it.
My guys know that their mother and I love them and whatever
they do we will ALWAYS love them, always.

As long as they remember that, we cool.

35. My family visited Disney World
in the late 70's; at the end of the trip we were allowed to pick out a stuffed animal from the gift shop. My brother picked Mickey and I had wanted Donald, but they were all out, so I opted for Minnie instead. My father was initially embarrassed and tried to steer me away, but gave in because I didn't recognize the remaing B and D list characters.
