Rhetoric Rule 46: "X didn't listen to Y" = "X didn't listen to me"
Edited on Thu Nov-04-10 01:45 PM by gulliver
"X didn't listen to Y" is a generic statement where X is usually some individual target of criticism and Y is usually in the set {me, America, the American People, Democrats, Republicans, voters, etc.}. However, in interpreting the statement when the statement is heard or read, Y, regardless of the value it is given, can almost always be interpreted as "me." Doing so almost invariably changes a false or misleading statement into a true one.

On edit: The statement "I listened to Y, and Y agrees with me" is invariably false except for Y = me.
