Yahoo News confirms disproportionate drop in gay vote support for Dems

by John Aravosis (DC) on 11/04/2010 03:30:00 PM

http://gay.americablog.com/2010/11/yahoo-news-confirms-disproportionate.html

First the article poo-poo'd the drop in gay support, then the researcher realized the drop was significant, and worse than any other groups. This backs up the data I posted last night.

Exit polling commissioned by the major cable news networks has found that 31 percent of people who identified as gay, lesbian or bisexual voted for Republicans on Election Day. That represents a big uptick from the 24 percent of gays who voted for the GOP in 2006 and from only 19 percent who did so in 2008. The trend appears to bear out pre-Election Day predictions from gay rights organizers that gay voters were angry and disenchanted with Democrats for not delivering on promises to the community.

2. Again ....
So?

The proportion of the vote in the US that gays hold is not nearly large enough for even a 50% drop to swing the elections to any significant degree.

Blaming gays or implying blame is lame.

Dumb of them to do vote GOP IMHO but not any more stupid than trying to lame the blame for this election at thier feet.

9. Bbbbbut I've been told that all Democrats stayed with us!
And that no one stayed at home, switched for a protest vote, voted third party, or wrote someone else in because they just might be a little pissed about capitulation and being told "No we can't" on issues that are important to them! The very same issues that were a big part of the 2008 campaign!

Surely I haven't been lied to!?

10. Gays had NOTHING to do with the loss......

Their numbers are negligible in the scheme of things.

At most, it cost us 5 or 6 seats out of the 65 we lost.

If every gay person in America voted, and voted Democratic, it wouldn't have changed the fact that we were going to lose the house.

I'm not going to blame gays for this loss. This loss is on *ALL* Democrats... because too many of us stayed home.

12. "Their numbers are negligible." "At most, it cost us 5 or 6 seats..."
Those are truly pathetic statements. Shame.

14. You forget, we not only vote
we give money. We campaign and volunteer. And we encourage others to do the same.

When you piss off a member of your base, there is a lot more damage done than just one annoyed voter.

16. Are we overprioritizing gay marriage and DADT repeal then?
Edited on Thu Nov-04-10 04:47 PM by gulliver
It would be bigoted to assume that gays themselves don't have a range of opinion on even these so-called "gay issues." But I have to admit, my impression was that the support for them was nearly universal in the LGBT community. A third of gays voting against the only party that supports "gay issues" tells a different story. It doesn't fit, and that is why I doubt the validity of this post.

Speaking in terms of the Dems, I am fine with us fighting for the civil rights of LGBTs on civil rights grounds alone, not just because these people vote primarily with us. It would be a shame if some of them abandon us either before or after "gay issues" are resolved in their favor, but that is their choice. There are undoubtedly some LGBTs who vote Democratic who will switch once gay marriage and DADT are resolved. Perhaps this 31% is a preview due to optimistic results for gay issues in the courts.

Or maybe the poll is just BS. Who knows.

On edit: Changed "they" to "some of them". I don't think all or even most LGBTs vote Dem simply because we support LGBT rights. In fact, those I know also support Dem environmentalism, foreign policy approach, and the civil rights of others. I don't think we would lose them after DADT and gay marriage are resolved in their favor.

19. I can't deny that.
I personally support gay marriage, but them I am not the President or even town dog catcher. Obama's support of civil unions and DADT repeal puts him on the side of LGBT rights, but short of what is needed. He has to balance a lot of interests. I have no idea how many in the LGBT community support all Democratic/Progressive ideals vs. those who only vote Dem for so-called "gay issues." Those who only support the Dems for gay issues aren't going to be around for the long haul anyway. Perhaps the direction the issues are taking in the courts makes them conclude they might as well go Republican now. I would like to think most LGBTs are Dems because they believe in all of our principles.

17. This article seems to be saying that some gays switched their
votes to GOP as opposed to not voting at all. Am I reading this right?
