Countering right wing media, specifically talk radio....
I was wondering if there were any organizations whos primary goal was to help establish a progressive counter to right wing talk radio. I live in Raleigh, NC which for all practical purposes should have a market for progressive radio, but we don't have one. We do however have TWO right wing stations. One of which is now on the FM dial.

1. Unfortunately there is no support for progressive radio...

amongst sponsors. Progressives have trounced the wingers in a number of markets but never last due to lack os sponsors (despite good audience numbers) or management which is right wing and would put on Limbaugh if he had one listener.

2. If there were listeners, there'd be sponsors.
That's the way radio works.

Can you show me evidence of when "Progressives trounced wingers in a number of markets"?

Everything I read about Air America was the audience was too small.

3. We will never get corporate owned stations to carry progressive talk
no matter the numbers. In Indianapolis we have 4 right wing talkers, NO progressive. The only way we have a chance is for wealthy progressive to put their money where there mouth is and start buying radio stations and programing them accordingly. Then progressives MUST support these stations and their sponsors. You will eventually get sponsorship if it is proven to be a profitable or even break even venture for them. You might eventually even get a few conservative leaning sponsors because the one thing those righty sob's love as much as their warped ideology is their money

5. This is what i think too...
I think its pretty obvious corporate radio isn't very interested in progressive talk. Thats why i was wondering if there were any groups whos mission it is to counter conservative talk. I fully admit I know nothing about the radio business and costs associated with it. I just find it hard to believe that in an area like mine if there is a market for two right wing stations and a half dozen or so Christian stations, there should be a market for just one progressive station.

I agree that if the listeners are there that many advertisers probably don't (or at least shouldn't) care what the message is. They just want to reach an audience.

4. We have one local progressive station...
what I love about it is that there is a considerable amount of time devoted to local political/gov't issues as well as state political issues and not just national. They also play Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann, Big Ed, etc. during the weekdays.

BTW, I think that we have to start with challenging a person who leans more on radio to do their thinking for them to think for themselves, first. Ask them questions which force them to DEFINE their memes. Making fun of them makes me feel better but it will shut them down and not accomplish the goal of getting people to think differently.

6. Radio is a dying media.
With the advent of the Internet and Internet ready devices like smartphones, podcasts and streaming shows are a much better media for progressive talkers, especially since the progressive audience tends to be younger.

Plus, you don't have to worry about scheduling - someone can just pick up a podcast and listen to it when they want to anywhere they want, without worrying about frequency of radio or being in a car at the time.
