I work for a school district and my husband works for a private small company. Dental insurance for a family at my job is $200 a month for a months. It is similar at my husband's company. We both opted out of this employer coverage. My husband was paying AFLAC that $300 a month to cover both of us. He canceled that because they told him they wouldn't pay for more than ONE root canal or cleaning a year.
When he was out of work and we have no insurance, or MONEY, we joined a dental discount plan for $150 a YEAR for an entire family. I cannot tell you what the savings were, except that if was MORE than half. When we, including our kids, need to go to a doctor, and said we were out of work and out of money, you cannot imagine what they did for us; as in waved their fees, and gave us FREE sample meds from their closets.
I have had to deal with calling doctor after doctor for HOURS when we DID have insurance, trying to get one to see my sick daughter. They wouldn't take our insurance, new patients, HMO versus PPO, etc. What I learned from this experience is that you are better off being BROKE and having NO insurance AT ALL. They are just a money making business. Don't cover this, don't cover that. Give us your money UP FRONT.
I recently needed to have major major dental work done which would have cost $6,500 and is costing under this discount plan $2,500. Much of this is considered "cosmetic" under the insurance plans. Been there, done that. I have sat in the dental office hearing people complain that their insurance won't cover this procedure or at most only overs half the cost. I have told my experiences to people at work and right now FIVE people have decided to drop their employer insurance and go with this discount plan instead.
I have searched around and have not found any MEDICAL doctors with this type of discount plan, only dentists. WHY? As of January, coverage through my employer with cost just me the employee $159 a month WITH a $3,500 deductible. Think I will be visiting a doctor any time soon? My husband's employee coverage is about the same.
If I could find a MEDICAL discount coverage similar to this DENTAL discount plan, think I still sign up for my employee coverage? It's an OBSCENE rip off by INSURANCE COMPANIES.
