Working class voters vs. the Political class.
Edited on Thu Nov-04-10 07:23 PM by scarletwoman
A substantial number of self-identified "liberals" point to Republicans as the enemy, and are bemoaning the fact that the "enemy" has gained so much ground. Over and over again comes the plaintive refrain: "How can so many people vote against their interests?"

I recently saw a post that posited:

Republicans = them
Democrats = us

That's the wrong duality.

The reality is:

Political class = them
Working class = us

The working class is desperately flailing around looking for someone - anyone - to be on their side, and they will keep switching their votes in the desperate hope that this time the roulette wheel will pay off.

If betting on the Dems had actually paid off for the working class, we wouldn't have had the results we got this past Tuesday.

THAT is the simple truth.

5. Yes, although "working class" as a term is damaged goods
It's really an ownership class vs a serf class. The serfs, working or not, are given the illusion of power through stage-managed democracy while the ownership class continues to run away with the farm no matter what happens.

refused to identify with the working class and who have instead insisted that the working class is "stupid" and "ignorant".

The working class is not too stupid to notice that they're getting fucked. They may not understand why and by whom, but they very much DO notice it.

And they notice that no one is fixing that.

Yes, some of us recognize that we've been reduced to Owners and Serfs, but you'll never hear that from our elected Dems. So why would the serfs support them?

9. I mean it's "damaged goods" in the sense of excluding a lot of people
This is no longer the 1800's. We have a large class of non-working poor as well, and unlike right-wingers who wish they would just die, the left needs to take them into account. Marxist conceptions of there being only capitalists and workers are outdated. There's a whole new class at the bottom of the economic ladder, and it needs to be acknowledged.

13. If the working class was economically secure, the non-working class would also be taken care of.
When the grim bottom line of sheer survival is no longer an issue, far fewer people would fall beneath the grinding stone of capitalism.

Families would be able to take care of their disabled, and the social safety net would be sufficiently funded through the income taxes of workers making a living wage.

11. Disagree
Whether or not you have faith in Obama it was still the decision of those that voted republican for their vote. The republicans are NOT on OUR side, they wanted big companies to fail even though it meant millions of layoffs, they hate unions, they're for tax cuts that harm the country but protect their wealth, they are not on the side of the working class but THEY gave them power; That's not the fault of the liberals, that's not a prudent decision, and all that we can do is keep things in perspective instead of hang our heads in defeat.

Do you want everyone in this country who's not a teabagger, militia member, 5 percenter, business owner, trust fund baby, or white, christian radical to just crawl under a rock and die?
:rofl:

12. I want everyone in this country to feel like they don't have to struggle just to barely survive.
If the political class were to actually implement policies that would make that possible, voters wouldn't feel so angry.

People have good reason to feel angry. If they misdirect their anger, it's the fault of the political class for constantly feeding them bullshit.
