If the Republicans would not compromise with you when they were minorities of both houses of congress, why would you believe they will meet you in the middle now that they are a majority in the House of Rep?
You have stated in the past that extending the Bush tax cuts on the top 2% of earners would increase the debt to a level that you could not responsibly allow as President. Yet, you know very well that these Republicans are not sincere about the federal deficit and will insist upon extending those Bush taxcuts across the board and demand spending cuts instead.
If you compromise and capitulate to their demands, then you will lose the respect of most of your core supporters. That is my firm opinion. It will weaken your presidency and weaken the country's financial solvency. Both Alan Greenspan and David Stockman (both Reagan era budget specialists) have stated that it would have disastrous consequences.
This storm is fast approaching as the cuts are due to expire midnight at year's end. Will you be strong in the face of this storm for the good of this nation? The legacy of your presidency may depend upon it.
