11. It's your birthday! Have a cupcake!
(Can you tell I was singing?) Happy B'day from another 55 year-old (as of July). Welcome to DU. We have our share of knee-jerkers, just like any other site, but sprinkled in between the not-the-brightest-bulb-in-the-drawer are some amazingly gifted writers who offer wonderful insights and depth of thought. It takes awhile to sift them out but after awhile it will get to be second nature.

Again, welcome! :hi:

4. Thank you.
Same to you.

I'll have to remember to E-mail that message to my niece who lives in England. I don't know whether she and her family really do much to "observe" it or not -- she's American, her husband is English.

It's also the day to have Parkin, which is basically a type of gingerbread made with a fair amount of oatmeal. It's dark, sweet, chewy, and spicy, kind of like a gingerbread granola bar. I made some last year just to try it, and it was pretty good. A traditional food for GFD in northern England.

Remember, remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot...

12. Reality check: Guy Fawkes was a teabagger
He was pissed about his side losing in politics, so he attempted to murder the entire Parliament. And his main beef was that the country wasn't Catholic and didn't practice blind loyalty to the Pope. Honestly, people, being smart really is better than throwing a temper tantrum.

Mmmm, beeeeefff....

16. ... but they didn't fail. They kicked our asses.
The English celebrate his plot blowing up (so to speak). Americans, like the doofi we are, only know what they saw in that silly little misanthropic movie and think Guy was a hero, like Rambo with a blunderbuss. Argh, there aren't enough walls for me to bang my head against.
