"A historical drama set in Roman Egypt, concerning a slave who turns to the rising tide of Christianity in the hopes of pursuing freedom while also falling in love with his master, the famous female philosophy professor and atheist Hypatia of Alexandria." -IMDB

This is a movie starring Rachel Weisz about the Greek philosopher and scientist Hypatia. The movie is a good reminder that radicalism can grow within all religious groups especially when given the keys to government. Hypatia was murdered by a mob of Christians for speaking and thinking.

Excellent thought provoking movie!

1. It's an excellent movie, but keep in mind it's fiction.
I did some research after watching it. It's near certain that Hypatia was murdered by a Christian mob some time after the sacking of the library, but the movie depicts details about historical figures (like the bishops Cyrus and Selatius and the Roman proconsul Orestes) and events that cannot be confirmed today. Hypatia may have been an atheist, but officially she was a Roman pagan, and almost none of her works survived the multiple burnings of the library through the centuries, so what was really taught in her lessons (and who her students were, let alone her slaves) is conjecture. The insights she gains into the true nature of the physical universe in the course of the film are, well, plausible, but unlikely. Anyways, it's about higher truths and it's very moving, so do see it!

4. "Agora", meaning "market place"

I find it interesting that Christianity and commerce are so closely intertwined.

Hypatia died a violent death at the hands of a Christian mob.
