Call them whiners, pony-wanters, do-nothing bomb-throwers, basement-dwelling fantasists. Accuse them of never lifting a finger during an election. Do it, because there's no risk.
If you're right about their implacable laziness, there was no convincing them anyway. If you're wrong, and are insulting someone who has been a volunteer, worker and voter for the party in every election they could, no amount of internet harassment is going to undermine such commitment.
It's a cruel accusation, of course, and if you use it recklessly harm will be needlessly inflicted. But if you can't stand to hear criticism, and it makes you feel good to make the accusation, go for it. In practical terms, you will find the unfairly accused back at the phone bank, back walking the precinct, and back at the polls anyway.
Of course, if you can't stand to hear criticism, one wonders how you could ever speak for hours on the phone to strangers spewing the worst kind of bile at the president and the party. One wonders how you could ever be found knocking on doors and patiently dealing with the open contempt, fear and hatred many have for Democrats. One wonders how you could ever grit your teeth to support a conservative Democrat that despises openly everything the party has accomplished.
I shouldn't make these insinuations, not only because they rely on baseless innuendo, but because you can't stand to hear criticism. Being on the left, though, I'm willing to be insulted if it makes you feel any better. You won't chase me out of the party or the precinct, off the phone or away from the ballot box. You won't bully me out of criticizing bad policy and strategy from the party I support either.
So let fly! First one to accuse me of sitting on my ass and never doing anything (or actively defeating Democrats) gets a gold star.
