Blind Boy Visits KSC To Feel Launch
Charity Helps Boy, 9, Travel To Central Fla. For Final Discovery Launch
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Living in Central Florida, it can be easy to take shuttle launches for granted, but one young boy has traveled more than 3,000 miles just to hear shuttle Discovery's final launch.
Nine-year-old Robert Smith used to love watching the space ships in "Star Wars" and has dreamed of seeing a shuttle launch, but four years ago a tumor behind his eyes rendered him without vision.
The "You Dream A Dream" charity helped Robert travel from California so he can feel Discovery's final launch, which is scheduled for Friday at 3:03 p.m., up close.
Due to the delays -- the launch was originally scheduled for Monday -- Robert has spent the week at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, where he has had a chance to experience NASA robots and other KSC attractions along with other blind people.
