Eugene V Debs birthday is today
Edited on Fri Nov-05-10 10:28 AM by JitterbugPerfume
he was born in 1885 in Terre Haute Indiana

He is an American profile in courage , imprisoned for his support of strikers in the Pullman Car rebellion. While in prison he read Marx and became a socialist .

For a really cool overview of his life google "Don't Know Much About " where the wonderful insightful Kenneth Davis has written a piece about him

While you are there check out the bill of rights stuff! It is great!

2. it is a crying shame

22. There was a man.

He is gone, we need men and women to step up, fill those shoes. Those might suffer as much as he did, maybe more. But what choice do we have?

9. One of my favorite bumperstickers,
available from Northern Sun and other places, is:

"The Labor Movement: The Folks Who Brought You the Weekend"

Too bad that so many Americans are so incredibly ignorant of history. A large part of why we're in the shit we're in. (if you travel to European countries, you find that the people there often know far more about US history and politics than the typical Murkan. Pathetic.)

10. BTW, he was born in 1855, not 1885.
Edited on Fri Nov-05-10 11:57 AM by kath
found on that "don't Know Much About" page, which I'm reading now. Thanks! http://www.dontknowmuch.com/2010/11/socialist-convict-presidential-candidate-eugene-v-debs/

(my memory of historical dates gets a bit fuzzy at times, but since I helped both of my kids study for the SAT Subject Test in US History in the past two years (which they both kicked ass on,BTW, and were homeschooled. Forgive the little parental brag :-)) I'm much more up on that stuff than I used to be. So I'm sitting here thinking "Wait - weren't the Pullman strike and the Homestead strike and a lot of that other Labor movement stuff in the 1890's??" -- now it makes sense.)

returning to your link now. Thanks for this thread!

A little parental bragging is sometimes appropriate , by golly!

There is a lot of really good stuff at "Don't know Much"

It is to late to correct it by edit

20. Thanks. Linked out from that article was one of my favorite quotes of Debs:
"Too long have the workers of the world waited for some Moses to lead them out of bondage. I would not lead you out if I could; for if you could be led out, you could be led back again. I would have you make up your minds there is nothing that you cannot do for yourselves.”"
