Lower Taxes
If taxes were lower, would private charity flourish and able to take up the slack from the government? Or this is a false premise made by conservatives in beliving in inherent goodness of mankind and failure to understand of the concept of "survival of the fittest"

1. We should just eliminate ALL taxes.
I mean, who needs police and fire departments, roads, schools, clean water, sewers, public services, or any of that other WASTEFUL SPENDING! Get rid of it all. We can just go back to hunting and gathering like in the "Good Ol' Days". It is time to take Amurka back to the stone age!!!!

2. Its more about the decline of the middle class
at this point. 30 years of Reaganism is taking a severe toll.

3. Taxes have been a lot lower over the last 30 years. Charities are have a hard time picking up the
slack from the states. Oh, it would be so much fun to see people starve and freeze to death by cutting even more from the federal budget.

4. There are some things you need a government to do.
We could never have had a moon landing without government effort. Similarly, a military isn't possible through purely private means (and it should remain that way!). What conservatives won't admit is that any serious effort to alleviate the effects of poverty must also come through government and not private charities.

The fact that they won't acknowledge this means they don't really want any relief for the poor. As another DU poster has stated, the Bible isn't the source of right-wingers holy doctrine, the writings of Malthus and Ayn Rand are.

5. Interesting question, although...
That is the idea behind the current tax code allowing taxpayers to deduct most charitable contributions.

Personally, i don't think it would make any difference to those on the right at all. The whole "I'll give to charity on my own, but I don't want the government using my tax dollars for others" is bull$#!t. The ones I know are cold hearted and selfish enough that with no tax incentive, they would give nothing. Just my opinion.
