Latinos Saved Jerry Brown, Michael Bennet, Barbara Boxer and Harry Reid
And Harry Reid’s surprisingly easy victory over Sharon Angle is largely credited to Latino turnout. In particular, an anti-illegal immigration ad run by Angle during the campaign that depicted Latinos are illegals and criminals irritated and even offended many Latinos.

In California, it was a record Latino turnout with one of every five votes (22%) in California being cast by a Latino. That explains why Jerry Brown had such a surprisingly easy victory in the Governor’s race versus Meg Whitman and why Barbara Boxer was re-elected in the Senate race versus Carly Fiorina. Both races were supposed to be tight, in fact Boxer’s seat was thought to be in great peril by Democrats, but no one expected the Latino turnout to be so strong.

The head of the California Latino Caucus is Democrat State Senator Gil Cedillo of Los Angeles, who was a key figure in getting the Latino vote to turn out for Jerry Brown in California.

“Nationally, the Latinos are changing the game. And today, they are a loyal Democratic constituency,” said Gil Cedillo.

But Cedillo points out that a lot of the Democratic success in attracting the Latino vote is because the Republicans seem to going out of their way to antagonize Latino voters.

8. I don't think Latinos have been "with" the GOP for decades.
Edited on Fri Nov-05-10 11:58 AM by EFerrari
The GOP occasionally claims they are but their numbers always turn out to be bs.

ETA: Latinos are the youngest voting block in the country except for the actual youth vote. And they are mostly working people.

12. No, that's just what Rove said. It turned out to be bs.
George Bush claimed all kinds of "values voters" that no one could ever find.

15. And in the Case of Bennet - Liberals
even though he avoids us like the plague, disses us, or lumps us in with the "extreme on both sides"

16. There is a pernicious subtext, as well
And one that Democrats would be wise to exploit. It's not apparent in the excerpted passage in the original post, but you will definitely hear it when the Republicans make their analysis of the Latino vote: That is, that Democrats get elected thanks to the suspicious votes of people who aren't "real" Americans. Real Americans are, of course, defined as white, mostly male, older, and for whom the system as presently rigged works just fine. And if only we would just allow that voice to be heard, all would be right (and white) with America.

Democrats don't have to hammer the point, but simply point out that we are proud to appeal to all Americans, not just those on top.

17. Latinos are a very important bunch of voters.
If the Democratic party is smart it will pay close attention in 2012, and all of the time in between now and then.
