Complaining about Obama and the Dems is not Fun
Edited on Fri Nov-05-10 11:26 AM by Kurt_and_Hunter
Complaining about Obama and the Dems is not Fun.

Maybe it's fun for some but it isn't fun for me.

Cassandra is the most tragic figure in Greek mythology. She could see the future but was cursed that no one would believe her. And not only could her gift not save her civilization, city, people and family, it couldn't even save her.

She knew her whole life that she would be raped to death by marauding Greeks while seeking refuge in the temple of Apollo, and she was.

No fun in that story.

To me, complaining bitterly about Obama is not optional, provided one cares about politics. He has squandered the last shot to demonstrate that Democrats can govern effectively with both congress and the WH that we will have for a while.

This was all foreseeable and foreseen. I wrote reams about how candidate Obama was running on a platform of rescuing and restoring the Republican Party, whether he understood it in those terms or not. And for what?

There is no fun in it. It doesn't change anything, God knows. I am tired of it.

There are only so many hours in our lives and I cannot believe that I have wasted so many of them for 30-40 years critiquing political idiocy.

There are people out there who are happier than I (and more prosperous) who couldn't tell you who the Vice President is. And whatever suffering our leaders have to dole out to us, we get it whether we are informed or not.

So I may try to stop predicting, stop complaining and stop caring.

Being right just doesn't pay dividends. It doesn't make one happy or content.

1. I agree. I'd much rather be getting my way than having to complain.

5. No, please don't stop
It must be so hard for you, yet you must carry on, somehow, some way, even with no one here to agree with you.

I am sure you will find the courage to carry on your crusade against the worst political idiocy you have ever seen, even after George W. Bush.

Your selfless, pain driven crusade must find a way to carry on, for if not, how will we ever know, around these parts, just how much the President sucks?

7. An excellent comparison.
Cassandra and some angry Progressives have one thing in common: perceived hysteria.

Had she been calmer, more clear in her cries to the people to see what was coming down the pike, perhaps they would've listened to her.

Hysteria never wins. It's avoided like the plague, and it's counterproductive.

That said, the President has been very disappointing to me, too, but instead of publicly attacking him together with the rabid right, I try to keep a cool head.

18. No. But I don't go out into a public forum to shoot him down, either.
I leave that to the rabid right, because they're better at it, and I don't need to give them more ammo. They always use us to market how "the left is abandoning the President and Democrats" which always translates into "the Republican's have a point, and are being vindicated by Progressives, Liberals, and disenchanted Democrats."

Seriously. We need a rule like the one Reagan suggested to the Republicans, too.

19. So you think he's doing the wrong thing, but you come on DU and say he's doing the right thing?
You have over 1000 posts. Do you just not comment on him at all?

Do what you think you must but I think we have a responsibility to be straight about what we think.

23. What the heck?
I never claimed he was "doing the right thing". That's what YOU make of it. You must've overlooked the part in my post where I wrote "That said, the President has been very disappointing to me, too,".

How can you conclude I've said he's "doing the right thing" reading the above??

8. No offense, but I thought yesterday you had a thread on how DU would not allow you to complain.
I recommended that thread because of course you have that right.

So today you are giving up? Not a good idea.

10. So, I'll make a prediction: There will never be a liberal president nor liberal majority in either
house in the next 50 years. So, let's all stop voting for Democrats, reading up on what's happening in Congress, writing LTTEs, or calling our representatives.

13. Keyword is complaining
try something different and it is stop complaining and start offering accomplishments coupled with what we can do better. Do both not one alone and maybe it will make you not only feel better but give you something to be proud of but not satisfied with. We don't have to think all is great but we should be glad of what we have changed and take credit for it while we work to get improve.

14. Cassandra was actually caught in the temple of Athena, and was not killed by the Greek who raped her
She was killed later by the wife of Agamemnon.

16. You're squandering it even more then
Really how do you expect to get more progressive legislation out of this country? by complaining about Obama?

Get out of the echo chamber. The message of this election was the country is more conservative, not more progressive. It is delusional to think otherwise.

Better to complain about your fellow citizens who are right wing assholes and the M$M that carries water for the Republicans at every opportunity. That's what you are fighting again, and yet you pretend it is not so, and that the Presidency is all powerful.

Everyone bringing Obama down from the left is the real squanderer.

20. Your mythology is all over the place.

Cassandra wasn't a prophetess until adulthood, when she attracted the attention of the God Apollo.

According to some sources she was raped by Ajax the Greater while taking refuge in the temple of Athena (not Apollo), but not killed.

She was subsequently taken as a slave (which probably implied rape, although I don't think it's defined) by Agamemnon, but I don't know of any version in which she's raped to death - she was killed by Klytemnestra, along with Agamemnon, in revenge for his sacrifice of their daughter Iphigenaia.

of how policy is enacted. As if the President can just snap his fingers, or that internet posters know more about the feasibility of enacting policy than the President himself.

Whether or not people are happy about it is secondary (though I would hope people wouldn't be happy about it).

Much of the criticism is not well thought out and is more or less "venting" versus constructive criticism.
