With everything that's happened this week this is not the issue to get worked up over...

1) he's been suspende, not fired

2) he was suspended for violating company policies which didn't prohibit contributions, but required getting clearance in advance

3) what Fox News would allow its commentators to do is irrelevant

4) he'll be back

30. 1) Does being suspended mean that he's contractually unable to go to another network?
2) Is everyone who violates such policies treated the same way?

4) Let's hope so.

that she was suspended indefinitely from Air America. She's still waiting to be called back.

Keith's contract states he "should" get clearance, not that he must.

16. Contact information for MSNBC and Keith's boss HERE:
Provide feedback via this web page (be sure to select "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" as the show, so the feedback goes to the right place)

Keith's boss is Phil Griffin- NBC president. Feel free to contact Mr. Griffin and register your upset...as politely as possible.
E-Mail:phil.griffin@nbcuni.com
Phone:212-664-4444 (I believe this is a more general NBC switchboard, be sure to speak to the operator to make sure your call is routed correctly)

Now the truth is out. MSNBC caters to the Right Wing's righteous "obey-the-rules meme. I don't remember every having to ask permission of my superiors to give a political donation and I worked for a public university -- as an editor. I produced magazines, that went to the public. At one point I even had to go through the business of acquiring a Secret clearance.

This was a joke.

There is no fairness in the media and now they are silencing the only voice of truth and reason. Next is Rachael and rest of the progressive people in the media. All the progressive radio shows here have been shut down and replaced by right wing hacks. You can't hear any truth on the air anymore.

62. K&R. How many votes do our employers get, anyway.
So because MSNBC is a corporation, it can use its money to support specific candidates to its heart's delight. But it's employees have to ask permission to give donations to candidates, to exercise their free speech rights.

I believe that no employer should be permitted to restrain the free speech rights of its employees. The Constitution does not guarantee that private parties have to protect the free speech rights of their employees. But there is nothing in the Constitution to prevent Congress from passing a law protecting the free speech rights of individuals from the constraints of their employees -- except when it applies to the employer's business affairs -- such as trade secrets.

Wouldn't it be great if, in a show of solidarity, each host/anchor/journalist on MSNBC announced that they also had made political contributions? What would they do, fire them all?

I know it won't happen, but still...

Who for all rights walked off the set because he was preempted by the sports. And Dan Rather was fucked. Still one of the last great journalists out there. I'm laying this shit at Jon Stewarts feet. I really don't give much shit about him now. Without Keith, eventually the lead off for Rachel will die out, then Lawrence. Then Jon Stewart becomes the supposed left hatred movement. Which MSNBC is ratings driven. And they severely dropped the ball so hard it cracked.

131. A local Conservative talk-show host addressed this today...
He has sent a letter to MSNBC saying that while he thinks KO is a hate monger and a poor show host, the network was totally out of line for suspending him. But, I have question. Many polls say that America is mostly conservative. I believe this. Most people I meet daily are very conservative. Do you at DU think this is excuse for MSNBC to move to the right to compete with Fox?

192. No, I don't believe those polls. If there is a goal to move
to the right, it is because of Comcast. It's because of a concerted effort by big business to control information.

If this were to happen, I wouldn't doubt they'd be looking at the growing demographics, and start shaping how they view the news.

Welcome to DU, edogawa. :hi:

232. We are not a conservative country!
We are not even center right. Obama, who ran on progressive issues got almost 9 million more votes than McCain. When polls ask policy questions without indicating left or right, the progressive answer wins. In California the marijuana proposition, even though it failed, got more votes than any Republican.

Please keep in mind, the only ways Republicans can win is for them to stoke up our fears (like Sharia Law will supersede the Constitution) or to tell lies that we want to believe. Like, we can have 4 trillion $ in tax cuts for the rich and decrease the debt. Lie, lie, lie!

Give us the facts and allow us Americans to decide and discuss on forums, and not in the Fox News we report you decide sort of way.

That's the way I feel about it. I don't want or need the help of well paid pundits from either side of the aisle who believe they have the ability to interpret and then tell us how we should think.

208. Here's my letter. Feel free to copy any of it you like
Subject: Reinstate Olbermann
To: phil.griffin@nbcuni.com
Cc: viewerservices@msnbc.com, letters@msnbc.com, countdown@msnbc.com, KOlbermann@msnbc.com, dabrams@msnbc.com

Phil,

FOX donates millions to the Neanderthal candidates of the monied wing of the Crusader Party and billions more through the exhortations of its twisted cheerleaders upon the easily duped.

The "Citizens United" decision by the Supreme Court of the United States gives voice directly to corporations by ascribing to them a Constitutional protection for "Free Speech" that doesn't exist, because corporations are not people and have no right to "Free Speech" or any other Constitutional protection. Corporations are man-made. They are not people. Nevertheless, under the Court's perverted edict, corporations have unleashed a torrent of cash into the political sphere forever corrupting our democratic processes and forever demeaning the actual free speech of actual people, for whom and by whom this nation was founded.

Despite this likely insurmountable barrier to participation, actual PEOPLE still retain, while diminished, the actual FREE SPEECH right that forms the foundation upon which the Supreme Court's bastardized version is based. That means that under the Constitution, we the people have both a right and a duty to contribute our voices to the political process with our monetary support.

Keith Olbermann is free under the Constitution of the United States to donate his own money to any candidate he chooses. You're saying he can't both do that and work for you.

Your policy, silencing Mr. Olbermann's free speech or requiring your approval of his speaking of his monetary mind, substitutes YOUR free speech for his. And that's wrong. You don't deserve that sort of political megaphone.

Do people really work for your company under the expectation that their free speech rights will match, be subsumed by, or mirror your own? Really?

Because that's messed up.

We remember that the popular and insightful Phil Donahue was canned by your company to kow-tow to the reactionaries in power during the Bush years. Is this more of the same?

You need to release Mr. Olbermann's free speech. His donations are at once none of your business, and also nothing more than a tiny pebble compared to the gigantic boulders of monetary discourse lobbed by executives of your company and others. Who really "approves" the massive donations of executives? Why should worker donations receive any more scrutiny?

Here's your actual policy, apparently:

"If a contribution, monetary or otherwise, to a candidate or group with a political or social agenda could create the appearance of a conflict of interest due to the employee’s responsibilities at MSNBC.com, the contribution must receive the prior approval of the section Executive Producer or Editor in Chief"

It might be a newsflash to you, but Mr. Olbermann was hired FOR his views. Not only is there NO conflict of interest between his contribution and his responsibilities requiring him to seek prior approval, you can NOT prove an "agenda" to the candidates he contributed to, even if you WOULD rather he mimic your own version of speech.

Reinstate Mr. Olbermann.

And then apologize for silencing his free speech.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Cheers,

______________

141,759 people have taken action— 113% of our goal of 125,000!

EMERGENCY PETITION TO MSNBC:

Keith Olbermann made your network a success. If you want your viewers to keep tuning in to MSNBC, put Keith back on TV now!

SIGN ON THE RIGHT! (Join over 135,000 others!)"

Background:

Huffington Post reports: "MSNBC has suspended star anchor Keith Olbermann following the news that he had donated to three Democratic candidates this election cycle."

NBC policy does not prohibit employees from donating to political candidates -- but MSNBC president Phil Griffin is miffed that Keith didn't get "prior approval' first. Meanwhile, Republicans Joe Scarborough and Pat Buchanan also gave political contributions -- but are not suspended. We've had enough insanity this week -- we don't need more because Phil Griffin's feelings are hurt."

Comcast is buying MSNBC...

Comcast depends on FOX for a lot of it's bidness.

Fox don't like Keith...

Here, a box of crayons, serious.

This info has been posted like all day and shit.

If they decide that TDS is against their bidness model, pushing repubs all the time... guess what? they will do the same to Stewart.

Do you need to be told who owns Comedy Central?

This is about the media MONOPOLY... jesus age...

250. This BITE IN THE ASS is why we should defend journos from being fired even if you don't like them.
KO and Rachel defended the Administration's increasingly right wing "progressive" policies like mandatory privatization of health care. They were good soldiers.

No, this is about taking the network to the far right to compete with Fox, and everyone on the blogs is either making a concerted effort to prevent this guy from being fired or else we are pissing in the wind, thinking this decision will be reversed. It will not be unless there are consequences for the media conglomerates' actions. And yet most people here still act like cable TV is a necessary public utility that everyone has or should have, not something they can switch off if their bosses' actions don't suit them.

This is bad KARMA for all the journalists people sneered at when THEY got fired for being "not progressive enough", "didn't get along with my favorite talk show host", brought up issues of racism, etc. Some of these fired talk show hosts weren't attractive, but we should always oppose the chilling of corporate media (of course, that is an oxymoron in itself, it's corporate media.) But some people don't see the big picture. This is all engineered from on high. All these guys make mistakes but whether to fire, say, Imus or KO for their "next slip up" is engineered in advance based on ratings and messaging (what message the network wants to be sending their audience, which viewers they want tuning in, what propaganda they want to send out.) If Big Ed got fired some people would be cheering... more bad KARMA bring on the circular firing squad.

No, people don't see that it's NOT the stated reason that is designed to appeal to self-righteous bloggers, ("oh, but so and so gave money too..." you think they give a shit?) It's a raw display of naked power... It's a campaign to silence the media across the board. They'd do it to a RWer too if he went off the reservation. THERE IS A RESERVATION and EVERYONE WHO RELIES ON CABLE for info IS ON IT :( We can't pick and choose journalists we want to see keep their jobs in hopes of getting a more liberal (but still scripted) media. Otherwise the OWNERS will use the same principles to pick and choose the journalists THEY want appearing on television...

Edited on Sat Nov-06-10 02:20 AM by felix_numinous
and yet MSNBC fires a headliner for donating to Democratic Party?! It is only government employees who have limits on their political activities, but he is a corporate employee.

Corporations are not supposed to tell their employees who they cannot donate to, because they are not supposed to be connected to the government. Especially news organizations--plus it cannot be a surprise who Keith Olbermann donated to. I think MSNBC just got busted. Now they can't say they are any different than Fox.

The timing of his suspension, right after the primaries, when Repubs gained seats in the house, smacks of their arrogance. Plus something tells me if he donated to the Repubs, this would have never happened.

Good luck Keith, hope to see you soon, kick some ass.

258. from Bigthink.com
"It appears that MSNBC's rules are enforced selectively. Conservative MSNBC host Joe Scarborough donates with impunity, ostensibly because he's a commentator rather than a journalist.

An unnamed source told Gawker that MSNBC doesn't hold its hosts to NBC News rules anyway:

"The standards department has told us that MSNBC doesn't answer to NBC News standards," the insider said. "They don't have coverage over MSNBC. They used to, back before MSNBC went political, but at some point it became too hard and MSNBC was taken out of their portfolio. As far as I know, there are no ethical standards at MSNBC. And if NBC says MSNBC is supposed to be living up to the NBC News standards, that's a preposterous lie."

It's an anonymous source talking to Gawker, so take it with a grain of salt. But it's hard to imagine how MSNBC could have been holding Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow to NBC News standards of impartiality all this time.
Like Hayes, Olbermann and Maddow are proud opinion journalists."

268. You are the enemy within... my email to MSNBC
How ironic... one rule for employees while Phil Knight -- formerly head of GE owned NBC, Phil Griffin at Comcast and Comcast as a company have given, and continue to give, generously to republicans. They undermine journalism at every turn by selecting employees who will present/read their corporate biased news, then intimidate them into disclosing all their political donations for CEO scrutiny and approval. Some democracy. It's a race to the bottom, to see who can outfox FOX (FAUX) News.

I turned off the vacuous infotainment noise at NBC; and CNN became a wasteland so long ago, I cannot recall when I completely tuned it out. I ONLY tuned into MSNBC for Keith, Rachel and Ed... all bright, shining lights in the sea of darkness, misinformation, distortion that TV "news" has become. Now with Keith gone, I'll likely tune out and cut off cable altogether since the cable companies are blood-sucking vultures and peddlers of mind-numbing garbage. Anyway, you probably don't care how I feel or what I do, but there are millions of kindred spirits across America who feel as I do. Perhaps if we all turn you off and tune you out, it'll hit you in the only place you recognize: your pocketbooks.

This past election was not a referendum to return to the kind of economic and social havoc first brought by that GE shill Ronald Raygun (spelling intentional) with trickle down economics that issued in huge deficits and began the undoing of the middle class (though many in that middle class fail to see what hit 'em because of the government hating propaganda disguised as news first brought to us by NBC's Fleecing of America segment on the Nightly News). The election was also not a signal to return to the hell wrought by the Supreme Court selection of Bush in 2000. It was instead a result of the propaganda machine that corporate-owned TV news (MSNBC) has devolved into, something Franklin Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower warned would be the end of America. So farewell, Comcast-MSNBC, you are the enemy within.

We're Democrats, that's what we do, we wail, we gnash, we lose in droves.

This is about the Citizens United case.
How Keith couldn't contribute, but corporations can.
Keith's contributions are limited to $2400 per candidate, whereas corporations contributions aren't limited.
Keith's contributions are made public, whereas corporations do not have to publicize who they give their millions of dollars to.

It's the selling out of America.
This is no longer a Democratic Republic, it's a freak show extravaganza sold to the highest bidder.

According to the Supreme Court, that's okay.
That's what our Founding Fathers were thinking when they wrote the Constitution -- Not!

It's about honesty, FAIRNESS, compassion, generosity, logic, basic sense of human decency, knowledge, facts, reason, respect for history and an ever more clear realization that America now engages in WARS OF AGGRESSION just because it can. Apparently to serve the military industrial congressional complex at the expense of the well being of the people of America? a WIN-LOOSE government?

The conventional wisdom is that America will invade Iran in 4 months. Did Keith just get "Phil Donahued"? Do our evil overlords think that they can propagandize our country into yet another perpetual war? How much of this shit are we the people going to tolerate?
