What the Olbermann debacle proves beyond any doubt is that

we need, once again, an OBJECTIVE (as opposed to fair/balanced/biased/editorialized) press. I'd feel far mor ecomfortable condemning Olbermann if he tried (because no one can be entirely) to be objective.

He doesn't, precious, precious few on TV NOOZ do, so no real problem, I'm afraid.

Sadly, I think the very idea of objectivity is extinct. I pine for the days of Walter cronkite, Huntley & Brinkley, and Howard K. smith and Harry Reasoner. They ended the Vietnam War and brought down a President--by simply showing and telling it like it was.

EDIT: I AM NOT CONDEMning Olbermann, in fact, I'm defending him, because he doesn't offer any pretense of objectivity.

1. I don't think that Keith is a news person.
If he were he would sit on his desk and cross his legs like Katy. Yes he should be more fair and balanced like FOX. Your comments let me know that we are closer to the end than I thought.

2. "Fair and balanced" dows NOT equal objective.
Objective simply means reporting the facts with no spin (or as little as possible, reporters are human) and letting the viewers form their own opinions.

Not even really a subtle difference between the two.

8. I don't think that Keith feels he has to be objective or fair or balanced.
I think he feels that he has to be truthful! You are looking for some old fashioned ideal of newsman that has long gone. Really...even Walter Cronkite had an objective. The fact that you can debate this when FOX does what it does is incredible. Let's just get it over with and let the corps have all of the air time. You will love the world then.

10. From a desire for objectivity you get "pro-corporation" from me?
Well, if it passes for debate on TV I suppose it's no surprise that straw men arguments are worthy for internet discussion.

3. My first thought too. Keith's show is a commentary show
It was never intended to be the Walter Cronkite hour.

7. Thing is, it's not just Keith. Even the ones who are supposedly doing straight news interject
opinion now. Just watch a CNN morning show, Fox and Friends, etc.

We need this to stop. Political commentary cannot take the place of news.

9. Yes, straight "daytime news" shouldn't be infected with personal opinion

Fox started the downhill slide, perhaps they will "man up" and fix it. :eyes:

:sarcasm:

5. For years I felt we needed an answer to Faux News. Now that we have one
people are trying to stifle that voice.

6. Real news is simply dead. We need to make our own news and we do, really.
I don't trust most of them and the other half are all political biased pundits.

11. Look, folks; I am fine with commentators like Keith and Rachel Maddow, especially
Edited on Fri Nov-05-10 02:13 PM by blondeatlast
when there is a licensed, sponsored, and excusive GOP outlet like FAUX News.

But I would prefer that there was just one, ONE outlet for straight news with no spin. I think it is highly unlikely I will ever see it; I doubt it is even being taught in journalism schools anymore. But STRAIGHT NEWS REPORTING ended a war and felled a President. Wouldn't you have appreciated that about, say, 6-8 years ago?

BYW: I DON'T CONDEMN Olbermann because he doesn't try to be objective. If he did, I'd be the first to do so.
