52. If they would screw Keith, they will screw Rachel, Ed and Lawrence
before too long.

When Republicans were in power the last time, MSNBC did the same thing. Started firing all their progressive hosts and reporters.

They fired Donahue, who had the top rated show at the time.

They fired their star reporter, Ashley Banfield when she told the truth about the war in Afghanistan.

They wanted to 'go righter than Fox' because they thought that was the way the wind was blowing at the time.

Now, the Republicans are back, and here we go again.

Rachel is smart enough to know if they got rid of Ashley Banfield, she better watch what she says from now on.

If the French can stop the country from functioning in order to stop the government from raising the retirement age, the least we can do here to preserve progressive voices on the media, is simply turn it off until they get the message.

29. Um, excuse me for asking this, but....
Unless there's some sort of tracking device or people are reporting to some central entity keeping tabs on such things, exactly HOW does not watching a certain network help or hurt anyone?

Really.

Does anyone actually believe that a couple of dozen (or even a couple of hundred...best case scenario) people on an internet discussion board can influence a giant corporation/network?

Honestly, there are times when I think I've fallen into the black hole of the Twilight Zone around here...

sigh...

38. Again....
who is this "we"?

A couple of dozen DUers?

Or maybe a few thousand people around the country?

I guess people have short memories. Back in 2004 when John Kerry was running against W, the ABC network was planning on showing an extremely inflammatory program invented by those sleazy Swift Boat assholes.

I remember how outraged people were...threatening ABC and its affiliates with all sorts of things...not going to ever watch their channels again...complaining to sponsors, etc.

You know what happened? They laughed at us and did what the hell they wanted.

I'll bet the same thing happened after the Dan Rather debacle, too.

Hey, if it makes you all feel better to express outrage, then go wild. Just don't be surprised if it doesn't make a shred of difference.

50. It used to be the Nielsens
so you could see that.

These days YOUR cable system tracks all you watch... lovely thought.

So yes, they know up to the minute what is being watched and what is not.

Why do you think we have moved from Weekly demographics... Nielsens had to get the data, to DAILY demos.

Dime on dollar that today's demo for the eight O'Clock show was LOWER.

59. That is so very not true
They do not track all you watch, I wish to hell they did, I'd be making more money. In the biz, since I was a kid. This is my bread, butter and roof. The difference in the speed of Neilsen reporting has to do with the way the information is gathered now, which is no longer a physical log being mailed in, it is electronic. Just like this message, it will post instantly. Imagine DU by mail! That is the difference.
I read the paranoia based 'they track it all' stuff with amusement. I wish. Many of us wish. They wish, for that matter. It is simply not the case at this point in time.

62. I don't have a cable company...
I have satellite.

Also, and just very coincidentally, I'm sitting here looking at the envelope containing the TV diaries sent to me by....The Nielson Company.

Second time in ten years.

Because, presumably, they want to know what we're watching here, because, also presumably, they can't tell what we're watching here.

And...another fly in the pie...unless these cable and satellite companies have little cameras hooked up to their equipment to spy on people in their homes, they don't have a clue as to whether someone is actually watching the TV or whether it's on and people are not even paying attention to it.

That's how things operate at my house. The TV is on all day, but most of the time, nobody is really sitting down actively watching it.

If they're keeping track of what channels are on without taking something like that into account, then the data they think they have is absolutely wrong.

89. He doesn't
After all, even the bother of writing a few emails, making a call or two or writing snail mail would be effort. It is far easier to disabuse of any notion that anyone cares about anything any of us say.

I find it ironic that anyone on a political website, particularly a progressive leaning democratic one, would attempt to convince us that our opinion and our power as people does not matter.

Even if it gets up to 200,000 these people...the networks...know that Americans have very short attention spans.

People will sign the petition, then forget.

Unemployment...shitty health care...people with health problems...foreclosures...other personal problems.

You don't really believe that people going through personal problems or tragedies are going to remember...or CARE...next week that they signed this petition, do you?

A bunch of people might sign that petition today, then find themselves out of a job next week and not give two shits about Keith Olbermann.

That's just reality.

60. No, I just poo-poo the ones...
that don't make any sense.

I've been around for a while, and I've seen the many calls for boycotts of various people, things, places, and institutions.

Most, if not all, of them have been pointless in the long run and have accomplished very little, if anything, besides making the boycotters feel like they have control.

It's all as stupid as it was when the RWers boycotted all things French when France pissed people off during the early days of the Iraq war.

Then Congress very STUPIDLY renamed "french fries". Remember that? "Freedom fries".

Remember when the RW crazies decided they were going to boycott all things Disney over some idiotic issue involving so-called "family values"?

That was some time ago. I don't see where the Disney Corp. went down the tubes because of it.

This whole thing is ridiculous. Keith Olbermann signed a contract. He violated one of the terms of the contract and now has to deal with the consequences. It's not about his "Constitutional right" to donate. It's about the fact that he could donate but had to consult with his employers first. How difficult is that?

He was wrong to violate the terms of a contract he signed. I'm not going to waste my time defending someone who doesn't have clean hands.

But if that sort of thing makes someone else feel better, then go for it.

There's nothing wrong with doing something that makes you feel good about your choice, but unless a boycott is local and focussed it is likely not to be effective.

53. Expand to boycott GE, parent company of NBC - & TELL THESE COMPANIES YOU ARE BOYCOTTING!
It's not enough to just not watch. If you're not part of the Nielsen ratings they'll never know. Contact them and tell them. Contact GE's investor relations VP and say GE's stock will be tanking soon because of this boycott and you're concerned.

Own GE stock? Call you broke and ask to sell it and divest of any mutual funds that include GE -- then email investor relations to tell them why you sold your stock.

Contact sponsors and advertisors on Olbermann's show. Thank them for sponsoring it and ask THEM to apply some pressure!

Tell them you don't want to see a non-liberal take over the show and would not buy products of anyone advertising on it if that happens. Ask them to urge MSNBC to put Olbermann back on.

56. Comcast already cut MSNBC years ago
No need to boycott MSNBC. Comcast cut it from its regular lineup years ago. just before the presidential elections. It would like nothing better than to see it gone. The only way is for everyone on MSNBC to walk but they seem more worried about the money and their so-called careers. Comcast is going to sack them all anyway.

67. Possible, but illogical....
Phil Griffin, as much as there is a rift between himself and Keith, knows he cannot cut him from the primetime lineup; Countdown has carried the network on its shoulders since 2003, and if it gets pulled because Keith gave a couple thousand bucks in donations, –– something Scarborough gets away with –– the network’s ratings will plummet further into the abyss.

83. No, you don't understand boycotts
You do them to pressure people to take action. You don't do them after action has already been taken, because that's too late.

102. I think we're being manipulated
That's what I think.

I'm not going to make a fool out of myself until all the facts are in.

I signed he petition, but participating in a ineffectual "boycott" isn't something I plan to consider until more information is in.

We watched a few episodes of Criminal Minds yesterday, but the TV hasn't been on much, and MSNBC hasn't been on the TV at all, since we learned Olbermann was suspended.

I miss Rachel Maddow.

74. Yes, and say we would do the same for Rachel,
and other liberals in the media. Haven't we had enough? They are trying to get away with dragging the media back to Bush years, before MSNBC allowed any liberal commentators. Keith Olbermann was the first, and he has been pissing off the right for many years. He has successfully taken down many of them.

The money saved will go towards Hartmann and Malloy podcasts. (Already get Randi and Mama.)

82. Might just as well remove NBC and all its affiliates from my cable package
Because I'm not watching any of it until Keith Olbermann is back on the air -- with Phil Griffin giving him a public apology on the very first show, and then doing the network and the viewers a favor and resigning on the spot.

I know. I know. But I can dream.

90. Anyone outraged about continuing torture and misbegotten war by this administration?
Or the discontinuation of all extended unemployment benefits the end of this month?

Because if you're going to take the time to sign an internet petition for Keith you might want to take an additional few minutes and fire off a letter or make a phone call to your Congressman/Senator and/or the President about the above.

Keith is great and I'm a fan and all but there are a few more pressing issues in the country that you might want to spen some time and outrage on as well is all I am saying.

I wish I could boycott MSNBC over their treatment of Keith Olbermann but unfortunately due to my economic situation I had to cut back on the number of channels I am getting from Dish Network (I know I probably should have canceled it completely) so I no longer get MSNBC.

probably would disapprove... but then again George Washington didn't want to be president and look how he turned up.

It is our free speech to turn MSNBC off. Or NBC, etc

(ahem does that mean nobody's going to be buying the Knight Rider dvd's?? )speaking for a son of mine :P
