http://www.huffingtonpost.com/youth-radio-youth-media-international/oakland-reacts-to-mehserl_b_779825.html

"Ansel Troy, Kasin Abdul and Chris Banks were just some of the young people who joined a small crowd at city center in Oakland in the hour after the former BART officer Johannes Mehserle received a sentence of two years for the shooting death of Oscar Grant.

Watch what they had to say about today's ruling:"

4. k and r. Add any poverty threads EVER getting much play when
DU can pump its chest and say how terrible fox is for the eleventy billionth time. Sad really, more like rooting for a football team then anything productive.

12. There have been several powerful, great poverty threads lately
Not one made it anywhere near the top of greatest, of course. And all are currently buried.

15. I always look for them and try to learn. I wish there was more posts
in the threads though. Lots of passion, and some may take some responses as abrasive - but I think they are always enlightening. Both parties (at least in public) bend over backwards for the "middle class" (or maybe, every now and then for the "working class")but you don't hear much about poverty or the poor from anybody. Often think what did the poor think of the government giving many $3500 to buy a new car or $8000 to buy a house. Not that those were necessarily bad but I am not sure if they met the greatest need.

19. Yep, always non-stop pandering to the muddle class
And occasionally something about the working class, but NEVER anything about the poor. Just completely absent.

What did the poor think of the car and house handouts? As one of them, I personally found it typical. Generous help for those who really don't need all that much help, at least from my perspective. I'd be thrilled to switch places with the ones needing the house and car help. I live in something that is neither a house or an apartment and haven't owned a car in eight years.

21. I am not poor and actually used the C4C deal. A thread about that
Edited on Fri Nov-05-10 10:19 PM by kelly1mm
at the time got me thinking about povery more. It really was people like me who could just write a check for the car balance that really benefited from the program - the poor would just have slightly lower car payments they couldn't make anyway. It may have made a difference for those few on the fence but I asked my dealer when I bought my C4C car about how people were getting financing (if you remember the loan requirements were tightening then) and he said over half the people were like me and just paid for the balance of the car straight up. That's when it really hit me that maybe the priorities were out of whack. I have been trying to learn more ever since.

5. The judge screwed it up.
He fucked up the jury instructions. Pretty much had to give him the minimum or declare mistrial.

And, hey, Plaxico Burress got the same for the same offense. Happens all the time.

Crappy deal, all around.

11. Due to the lack of outraged on DU over this sentence, the permanent silencing of
young man and the woefully inadequate sentence tells me a lot about liberal opinion toward young black men.

13. Well, for one thing, I could have sworn that I already heard this story and reacted to it weeks ago
If not, then I'm confusing it with a similar story and maybe others are as well.

I really don't think this is a race issue here.

We all saw the video; well all got pretty goddamned mad about it.

26. The sentence came down today.
And really. A white cop in a regional police force which has had numerous complaints about its racist enforcement has nothing to do with racism? This issue has been a problem for 20 odd years and this is not the first time that an unregulated no oversight police force member has shot an innocent young man in the back for no fucking good reason. (As if there would be a good reason to shoot someone IN THE BACK.)

32. I certainly wasn't suggesting that racism wasn't at the heart of this crime
I was saying that the preponderance of threads concerning Olberman's show was due to the possible loss of an on-air progressive voice, not just caring more about a rich white guy than a non-rich black one.

20. I think some of the confusion might be because the trial was in Los Angeles, but the crime occurred
in the Bay Area. I lost track of the story for awhile after the change of venue. The sentence is indeed an outrage.

24. Oh boohoo...
Peddle your "holier than thou" blather elsewhere. This is a liberal political site. Of course DU will focus on KO's recent suspension more than a trial which has been discussed on here many times repeatedly over the last couple months. It doesn't have to do with KO being rich or white, but your insistence that it does is pretty ignorant if not intentionally divisive.

Horrible injustices are occuring all the time and DU doesn't have huge threads on all of them (thank God) because otherwise it would be a pretty damn depressing place, more than it already is.

28. The grossly perverse sentence came down today. It is a travesty of justice and signals
that any black youth can be shot in the back with barely any consequences. That is, business as usual.

Meanwhile, a rich white man gets suspended from his job for breaking the rules of his employment?

OH MY FUCKING GOD!!!!!!! LET'S START A MOVEMENT!!!!! I'LL NEVER WATCH MSNBC AGAIN!!!! UNTIL I DO!!!!!

27. Sigh indeed. Oh my God! A rich white man got suspended. How will he ever recover!
This is horrible! This is a catalyst to start a movement!

What? Maybe 8% of the population even knows who Olbermann is?

And yet, youth, overwhelmingly black and brown but white too are criminalized just because they are youth.

And the every day mundane of incarcerating them deserves little but a sigh and no outrage for yet another white police officer who got away with murder.
