2. No...he resigned because he was the one responsible for saving our House majority
Edited on Fri Nov-05-10 08:46 PM by Ken Burch
And we all saw how well THAT worked out.

There was no excuse for us losing 60 seats.

3. Chris Van Hollen was instrumental in the Dem election
sweep in 2008. He is definitely not right wing and he is definitely not anti-feminist. I helped him win his first election when he defeated a very popular Republican who had been in office a long time.

That's about as accurate a statement as blaming the loss of the House on him.

15. I think one of the reasons Dems lost
is that the Repubs were successful with their lies with both Repubs and Dems. For example, a DUer is saying that Chris Van Hollen is anti-feminist even though your list of votes show that he is not.

16. If he wasn't, I stand corrected.
I'd repeatedly heard he was.

I also ask the mods to delete my posts on that specific point.

27. And unfortunately, a lot of DUers buy it too.
Van Hollen is anti-woman. Obama is an appeaser. Pelosi is incompetent. Having the House was worthless. That's just the crap I've heard in the last 24 hours. They live in a bubble of ignorance, either accidental or willful.

4. You're welcome!
Dad and I really had nothing to do with his resignation, but we'll take the credit, if it gets REAL Democrats in charge of the DCCC and DSCC again.

You are not likely to find a politician more liberal than he is.

21. If van Hollen is so liberal why wouldn't he pledge to not cut social security? And why won't the
DLC publish the names of their members? They used to. Me thinks van Hollen is just another DLCer.

24. Did you read the post by the Wraith?
No wonder the Dems lost 60 seats if DUers think the way you do. Blaming a good liberal like Chris Van Hollen is negative thinking. It doesn't win Dems a single vote, but it plays into Karl Rove's hand.

22. Most of that is not Van Hollen's fault, nor under his control.
Let's face reality here. Many of those seats lost were won in 2008 in very conservative districts. Add to that the tens of millions of dollars poured in from corporatist interests!

You still haven't convinced me. Sorry.

23. Chris Van Hollen is staunch liberal of an upscale sort, but also a bagman & was elected as such
Edited on Sat Nov-06-10 01:30 AM by Leopolds Ghost
Not to take individual stands... He stands where his party stands (or more precisely, the Progressive caucus) on every issue. So if the Progressive caucus folds on an issue he folds. He basically ran for office on the platform of being the Democratic Party's future leader before he won his house seat. That's why they picked MD-8 to run in. He's dedicated to grinding out numbers and "winning votes", like Pelosi. Like any good bagman, like Rahm used to be, his primary concern is to keep Dems in office. He's the sort of leader where they say "This is your big test. We're running you for office. We want you to move to Kensington. If you can defeat what's-her-name" (the RINO that used to govern MD-8, one of the most liberal House seats in the country) "we'll give you a leadership position".

But he is pretty liberal compared to his colleagues and certainly compared to Rahm. Anyoe they replaced him with would be less liberal than Chris. Isn't he the Progressive Caucus chair/whip?

26. Chris is angling for a Senate seat
once Sen. Barbara Mikulski retires, IMHO. Even though he is quite liberal, he seems to avoid controversy whenever possible.

I volunteered in his first campaign for Maryland's 8th District seat in Congress. In a remarkable upset, he defeated a well-liked moderate Republican, Connie Morella, who had held the seat for many years.
