Edited on Fri Nov-05-10 09:26 PM by Webster Green
It's just past dark now and protesters are gathering in Oakland. They are pissed.

I'm listening to KPFA radio live reports from the streets.

Could get interesting.

9. Oh, the guy who was brutalized on the subway. Okay, didn't know his name.
Edited on Fri Nov-05-10 09:24 PM by ClassWarrior
I doubt that DUers "don't care." In fact, I can name a half-dozen off the top of my head who I'm confident DO care.

This just hasn't received much attention from the Corporate Media.

So save your snark for your buddies on other sites.

18. Of course, everybody has an obligation to be aware of everything happening in the world
AND keep in all sorted in decreasing order of importance, AND manifest themselves only in accordance to such order.

I just got home late and hadn't heard. This is a debacle. I am appalled at that judge.

7. Keep it civil, people--but they have every right to be angry.
This was a miscarriage of justice and as I understand it, the jury instrux weren't proper.

23. I didn't say don't protest; I just don't want to see any more mothers
lose their children.

The OP is suggesting the scene is more than a little tense accordin to the reports. There's reason for the anger, I just don't want things to escalate to where there are more grieving moms.

so you can keep getting kicked in the face by a jackboot. One day we are going to have to put a stranglehold on law enforcement and get them back under control.

Power to the people. Their rage is justified. If the judges don't like angry mobs they can stop letting cops kill people for no reason. I'm joining THE SENTENCE IS TOO DAMN SHORT party.

17. Ironically I was just talking to my sister about this case today
because here in Philly, there is currently a deadlocked jury deliberating the death penalty for a young black man who killed a white cop. And my take was that when it is the reverse, death penalties always come off the table - citing the acquittals on the murder charge from the Oakland case. I didn't even realize that the verdict for this was even coming down until I saw it this afternoon.

"They have the authority to kill a minority". Funny thing, though- "accidently" kill a cop and expect the death penalty.

If there are no overturned cars and fires over this particular bit of jurisprudence the Nobel prize committee should probably be alerted.

I doubt he will be in the general population either. He'd better change his name and move far away when he gets out.

>> LOS ANGELES (KRON) -- Former BART Police Officer Johannes Mehserle is sentenced to two years in state prison for the involuntary manslaughter of unarmed passenger Oscar Grant.

The judge said he won't grant a new trial on the gun enhancement part of the case.

Mehserle has already served 146 days of the sentence. That means he might serve only another 219 days or a little more than seven months.

Earlier Oscar Grant's mother told the judge deciding the sentence for former BART Police Officer Johannes Mehserle that she lives every day of her life in pain because she doesn't have her son.
