Veterans day wasn't a candidate for 3-day weekend Monday holiday status because it has to be on the 11th of November.
It was originally Armistice Day, celebrating our victory in WWI. The armistice went into effect at the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month."
I have always wondered... were any people killed earlier that morning while we waited for the super-cute 11-11-11 hour to be reached?
(I know there will always be a last person killed no matter when a war ends... but, still.)

from accounts I have read, there was extremely heavy fighting all the way up until the very last second of the war. It's rather sad that commanders on both sides felt that necessary.
