Obama Nods to GOP Again in Radio Address

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama on Saturday appeared to make concessions to Republicans in his first weekly radio address since the midterm elections, saying he agreed "on the need to start cutting spending" while also leaving open the possibility of temporarily extending the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.
Tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 are set to expire on Dec. 31. If Congress doesn't act by then, taxes will go up for more than 150 million individuals and families in January.
Before the midterm elections, Mr. Obama said the tax cuts should only be extended for individuals making less than $200,000 and couples filing jointly who make less than $250,000 because of the potential impact on the country's deficit. Republicans, and a large number of Democrats, rejected this, saying instead that the tax cuts should be extended for everyone because the economy remains fragile.
The White House's position has softened considerably since the midterm elections on Tuesday. Instead of saying he still opposed extending the tax cuts for the richest Americans, Mr. Obama said on Saturday he opposed making tax cuts for those Americans "permanent." That nuance leaves open the possibility that those tax cuts could be extended, but for a shorter period of time...
