Ruling class muscling Rahm Emmanuel into mayor's office
Edited on Sun Nov-07-10 02:51 PM by proud patriot

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water after Mayor Daley announced his resignation after 20 years of corrupt machine rule in Chicago, the White House sends its dark horse galloping into the city on the lake to assure the ruling class their money is safe and any pesky working class sentiments be squashed.

All bets are on that Rahm Emmanuel, the self proclaimed "deal maker" whose speciality is acquiring political cash, and lots of it, is now in town ready to take the next prize he believes he's entitled to — to be the new boss of Chicago.

Emmanuel was a fundraiser for Daley and raised big bucks for President Clinton before returning to Chicago to get elected as a congressman of the fifth congressional district. He then helped get President Obama elected with his fundraising skills and worked as his chief of staff. Between his time with the Clinton administration and his return to Chicago to use his financial muscle to get elected to Congress from the Fifth Illinois Congressional District, he went to work in the "private sector" for three years, reportedly earning $18 million as an "investment banker."

Sure there are other candidates who lined up and scattered like birds once the Rahm steamroller came rolling down Michigan Avenue. There was Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart who had the hearts of southwest siders and his bright yellow signs on many lawns — but he dropped out.

Suddenly mayoral candidate Alderman Bob Fioretti — who was at almost every Chicago Teachers Union event from the day Karen Lewis was elected in July 2010 — has a bad cold and is ready to drop out as well after campaigning vigorously for some time...

12. WoW I guess you won't be voting for him to be mayor of Chicago.
The F bomb is so common these days it really doesn't have much impact anymore.

15. I've been many places&my memory isn't the best, but I'm certain that I have never been on a hook.
That really seems like the kind of thing I'd probably remember.

I tripped over a hookah once, and I remember that.
Perhaps that's what you're thinking of?

Not much substance there for education.

It's Rahm Emanuel. One m. I hope that person isn't a teacher.

6. It is a big deal.
That person is not helping his cause by spelling the name wrong. It looks amateurish.

20. Misspelling someone's name is never irrelevant.
Doing so multiple times in an article really doesn't cut it for an education oriented site. They spelled it wrong on the front page of the site too:

29. his residency issues have been settled
he maintained his voter registration here. you can live somewhere else for a job or schooling and still legally reside somewhere else. that is what he did.

17. Just because he's back in Chicago
doesn't mean he won't have his hands in every inch of the corporo-whore Democrts' machinations. People like that don't go away (Ref: Rove, Cheney), they just slink out of the national spotlight -- for awhile.

26. petty detail, sorta but not.
cbot is now owned by the merc (the chicago mercantile exchange), they are now cme group. petty, except that they have concentrated the money and power that much more. probably will soon swallow the options exchange. not that they didn't already have all the power they needed separately.

24. rahm is moving in while the head of the schools is moving out...
good thing the teachers union has some tough women running it cause "fuck the unions" rahm does`t like anyone who calls his shit.

it`s going to be interesting here in illinois where 50% of the schools can`t pass the nclb standards.

27. rahm has paid petition gatherers out there.
lots of them. you need money to run for anything. it is a big advantage to start with a big pile, for sure.

just sorta feel the need to occasionally jump on these daley/chicago bashing threads to point out that not everyone here shares this view of the city or the mayor. i happen to be very fond of ritchie, and proud of the progress this city has made in his time. it was circling the drain when he walked in the door, and is flourishing today, and weathering the recession better than a lot of places. for those that find him to be a megalomaniac, i have to ask- why is he the first mayor in chicago history to retire from the office?

lots of people here like rahm, lots of people here hate him. i am in the middle, although people who know him well have pushed me more towards disliking him. it is a fact, tho, that you need an ego about as big as his to run this city. at all. i have seen weak mayors, and it is a recipe for disaster. between the business interests, and the city council egos, and the needs of the city, present and future, it is a lot to balance. (and yes, the mob. a fact of life here and all big cities.) let yourself be cowed, and you are worse than useless.

as far as the website quoted here, i will add my comment to that above that the writing could do with a good editor. for a blog that specializes in teacher's issues, it does hurt the credibility.

28. Daley leased your parking meters for 75 years to plug a budget hole
Edited on Sun Nov-07-10 09:20 AM by jpgray
Convince me this is a sign of flourishing, if you would. From my standpoint he (and by extension, the entire city) got blown up by Morgan Stanley and the investors. You guys can't even get a parking holiday on Lincoln's birthday without compensating the owners of your meters for lost revenue. I'm reminded of the homeless I knew who stripped copper piping from their buddies' houses to tide them over for the day.

edit: Chicago's a great town, but Daley and Emanuel are not one with its greatness.
