Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) accused the GOP of "paying off their constituency" by wanting tax cuts for the top earners as well.
Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) said Friday that the first bill that should come out of Congress is an extension of unemployment benefits as he said Republicans "don't believe in anything."
In a Friday evening appearance on MSNBC, McDermott said he "absolutely" disagreed with extending the Bush-era tax cuts for all income brackets, accusing the GOP of "paying off their constituency" by wanting the extension for the top earners as well.
"My belief is the Republicans have -- they don`t believe in anything," he said. "The only thing they believe in -- and Mitch McConnell said it -- my job is to prevent Obama from being elected a second time. He doesn't care what happens to anything."
The congressman continued that
the GOP "have no interest in governing this country."
"And this paying off their constituency by giving them this tax break is just simply unconscionable when you are laying off librarians and you're laying off school teachers, and you're laying off firemen and policemen all over this country, and they're saying, oh, we have to give this money to the rich at the top, or they'll -- or I don't know, they won't be able to have Christmas, I guess," McDermott said. "I don`t know what they're whining about."
