Lil' Lindsey's Alexander Haig moment: "Nuclear containment of Iran is off the table."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/06/lindsey-graham-calls-for-strike-on-iran_n_779997.html

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican who sits on the Armed Services Committee and the Homeland Security Committee, said Saturday the U.S. should consider sinking the Iranian navy, destroying its air force and delivering a decisive blow to the Revolutionary Guard.

He says they should neuter the regime, destroy its ability to fight back and hope Iranians will take a chance to take back their government.

If President Barack Obama "decides to be tough with Iran beyond sanctions, I think he is going to feel a lot of Republican support for the idea that we cannot let Iran develop a nuclear weapon," he told the Halifax International Security Forum.

"The last thing America wants is another military conflict, but the last thing the world needs is a nuclear-armed Iran... Containment is off the table."

3. This isn't 1985, Lindsey. Sinking the Iranian navy would be like sinking every bass boat in Texas

They have hundreds of small, easily concealed speed boats armed with anti-ship missiles, along with many, many mobile shore launchers. Sure, their aircraft and larger surface combatants would be sitting ducks, but almost all of their resources have gone into developing many, many mobile anti-shipping missile launchers, which would take a long time for the US military to deplete to the point where it would be reasonably safe to start running warships and tankers in the Gulf, again.

Does Lindsey really want to start a war that cuts off the Straights of Hormuz for months on end?

4. Linds doesn't make the decisions
He might just be going off half-cocked, pandering to the hawks. But I think it's more likely that the administration, Pentagon, and Congress are working in tandem here (as they probably have been for quite some time on Iran, going back to the last administration), planting threats here and there through high-profile Republicans because they have little else they are willing to do.

5. What do you expect...The man represents South Carolina!
Reminder: The state started the Civil War. Not an electorate that is thinking "actions have consequences."

Here is an article about his constituency. Only 4 years to his next election, he must solidify his base.
