Massive Protests As Nuclear Waste Train Reaches Germany! Video Links Here

Massive protests as nuclear waste train reaches Germany
November 6, 2010

Berlin, Nov 6 (DPA) A train transporting nuclear waste from France crossed the border into Germany Saturday, where tens of thousands of anti-nuclear activists were demonstrating and attempting to block the tracks.

Witnesses reported that police had begun forcibly removing people from the tracks so the train could pass.

Police reported that at least 10,000 people began demonstrating in the northern German town of Gorleben, the destination of the nuclear waste transport. Activists also drove more than 600 tractors to the protest site.

Organisers expect up to 40,000 anti-nuclear protesters over the course of the weekend, which would make it the country's largest ever demonstration against the so-called Castor (cask for storage and transport of radioactive material) transports.

Chancellor Angela Merkel said activists' plans to sabotage from the railway tracks were, 'not a peaceful demonstration, but a criminal offence.'

Violence amid German nuclear train protests
BBC
November 7, 2010

Police have clashed with activists trying to halt a train carrying nuclear waste from France to Germany.

Officers used batons, pepper spray, tear gas and water cannon to disperse the protesters, who were trying to sabotage railway tracks.

The activists hurled fireworks at officers and set a police vehicle on fire, police said.

Earlier, the train was halted after protesters lowered themselves on ropes from a bridge over the tracks.

The clashes near Dannenberg, northern Germany, followed peaceful protests against the train on Saturday by tens of thousands of people.

Anti-nuclear feelings spark mass protests in Germany

November 7, 2010

Thousands of protesters have taken part in anti-nuclear demonstrations in Germany, as the first shipment of waste in two years was transported from France to Germany.

German police removed up to a thousand protesters blocking the train track on which the shipment was travelling, but reports say an alternative route was used to move the waste.

The main rally took place in Dannesberg, with many waving flags with the slogan "Nuclear Power? No, Thanks." Organisers estimated 50,000 took part in the rally, but the police put the number at around 20,000.

Protesters are angry over Chancellor Angela Merkel's plans to extend the operating life of Germany's 17 nuclear power stations, storage of nuclear waste and the dangers of transporting it.

Nuclear waste train meets with protest and violent clashes
November 7, 2010

Gorleben/Berlin, Germany (dpa) - Clashes between police and anti- nuclear activists turned violent on Sunday, as thousands of protesters delayed a train transporting nuclear waste to a storage site in northern Germany.

Police used truncheons, mace and water cannon to ward off demonstrators who lay down on railway tracks along the route to the storage site in Gorleben or tried to make them unpassable.

The train, carrying 11 steel containers of spent nuclear fuel rods, was forced to stop for one-and-a-half hours after protesters chained themselves to the track near the northern town of Celle.

In Dannenberg, farmers blocked all access routes to the town with tractors, in an attempt to keep police units away and maximise disruptions ahead of the train's arrival.

Protesters said that 1,600 activists were blocking the road to Gorleben, and planned to stay into the night. Amongst these was Claudia Roth, co-leader of the opposition Green Party.

1. Luddites are not progressive.
Nuclear power is absolutely necessary for global economic development. Social justice demands it.
