I would tell them to kiss it. I've donated to Democratic/progressive causes in the past, and will continue to do so. If they knew what causes I was donating to, what's the worst they could do? Fire me? Let 'em do it. I'm not going to be their slave. I work hard for what little money I get, and I'm not going to let any corporation tell me how to spend it. Eff the corporations. I'm a proud progressive Democrat who donates to Democratic causes and candidates. If it ever costs me my job, then so be it -- at least I am standing up for what I know is right.

1. If you donate to democrats you are a radical leftist.
If you donate to republicans you a good patriot.

Didn't you get the memo?

2. I don't think that would ever happen
but if you were to take a job as a reporter or other journalist they may well tell you not to express yourself politically. Personally I think it's a good rule, a good journalist should be able to report objectively and they should be seen to be objective. If their political stripes are shown the rest of their work is going to be colored by it whether or not it should be.

I still can't figure out why they would ask Olbermann to follow this kind of rule though as his show is pretty blatant commentary. He's never pretended to be an independent analyst as far as I know. He should be in the same category as Scarborough and any other opinion anchor not with Brian Williams and the rest of the journalistic crew.

4. Police here can't make political donations
Don't know if that's standard nationwide, but it's been a policy here for as long as I remember. They can't put political signs in their yards or bumper stickers on their cars either.

12. Pardon? Are you saying that in NC individual policepersons can not put campaign signs
Edited on Sun Nov-07-10 06:51 PM by haifa lootin
in their own private yards? Can you provide some kind of link to support this strange claim?

edit here, I'm not trying to be adversarial, I just find it hard to believe that any government entity would employ such a blatently unconstitutional rule...

5. There's a slight difference between working for WalMart and
...being on camera in front of millions.

8. Keith makes his opinions well known.
It's obvious from his commentary that he's a liberal who supports liberal causes. So why should it come as a surprise to M$NBC that he donates to liberal candidates?

7. What if Walmart would only hire you if you agreed per
contract that you would not make political donations without consulting them? Would you have passed on the job?

9. probably not
since I was so desperate for a job - any job - at the time I was hired. That doesn't mean corporations should have the right to require their employees get permission before making political donations. What I do with my money is my business, not theirs.

13. Really?
You don't see the difference between a common retail employee and a journalist on a major news network whose responsibility it is to remain politically unbiased?

14. Except he makes it quite clear
he isn't unbiased. He has been supporting liberal causes for many years now, it should come as no surprise he would donate to liberal candidates.

15. Except he was under contract...
specifically, NOT to donate to any political candidates. He SIGNED the contract. If he disagreed with the terms of the contract, he should never have signed it. Done. EVERYONE leans one way or another, whether they be an employee at Walmart or a talk-show host on MSNBC, but when your employer tells you not to go and advertise it, and you agree not to do that, you suffer the consequences.

16. actually, he could donate to political candidates ...
he just had to "get permission" first ... which, btw, appears to be what the RWers were calling "censorship" over the Juan Williams thing ...

17. walmart has pre-empted that possibility
by not paying you enough to donate to candidates.
