Should Democrats start referring to Republicans as fascists?
Mirror their stupid name-calling in the interest of balance?

Good idea? Bad idea?

4. We need to play hard ball and all use the same language
But I will not call them fascist. They are, indeed. But most folks do not see it this way yet. They stole the narrative, don't forget.

6. Bad Idea
Do we really know what the word "facist" means or are we just throwing out insulst? What does it accomplish?

If you want to be insulting, call them foolish and short-sighted.

But, I think we need to move past petty insults and do better to articulate our vision and differences. If the media won't support us in this, they aren't going to support us when we start name-calling.

Nah, if we really want to fight back we need to have regular demonstrations in front of the local offices of Republican congress critters for "Health Care Now." Forget demanding jobs, the recovery has begun and that could backfire giving the Republicans credit for the Democrats' work. We need to be just as loud asking them not to undo PPACA as the tea baggers were in their opposition to health care.

of a granted simple list and not an indepth study, I'd say yes. The tea baggers and Republicans fit the bill.

22. Britt left out nationalized industries, "progressive" legislation (in the 1920's sense of the term)
and populist rhetoric (the kind of thing we keep calling for here).

Who was closer to fascism in the US: Herbert Hoover or Father Coughlin?

The disdain of educated people, artists (all kinds), science (education, in general) is, however, their big tell.

But we could NEVER call them fascists, even though the only thing they're missing are the brown shirts and swastikas.

19. No. Fascists rounded up tens of millions of people and methodically killed them.
While, incidentally, nationalizing industries and implementing anti-smoking campaigns.

Today's right-left split really has almost nothing to do with the political split of the early 20th century.

24. The rounding up and killing only happened after YEARS of fascism!
Maybe you should review your WW2 history, the holocaust history and what led up to it. Too many of us are totally unaware that the holocaust was merely the conclusion of years of fascism. . .which started by the German extreme right rejecting, then attacking the German Socialist party and the Unions. . . The extrem Right convincing the Germans (too many of them at least) of their "special elitism," and of other races (and gays, and disables) of "lesser qualities and sub-human characteristics," and then (only then) did they begin the task of herding the Jews (and the gays, and the disabled) into ghetto, then camps, then crematoriums. . .

Give the extreme right 10 years of power. . .and we would not be too far from WW2 fascism!

21. From The Horse's Mouth...
Benito Mussolini:
What is Fascism, 1932

Benito Mussolini (1883-1945) over the course of his lifetime went from Socialism - he was editor of Avanti, a socialist newspaper - to the leadership of a new political movement called "fascism"

("fasces" on left)

Mussolini came to power after the "March on Rome" in 1922, and was appointed Prime Minister by King Victor Emmanuel.

In 1932 Mussolini wrote (with the help of Giovanni Gentile) and entry for the Italian Encyclopedia on the definition of fascism.

"Fascism, the more it considers and observes the future and the development of humanity quite apart from political considerations of the moment, believes neither in the possibility nor the utility of perpetual peace. It thus repudiates the doctrine of Pacifism -- born of a renunciation of the struggle and an act of cowardice in the face of sacrifice. War alone brings up to its highest tension all human energy and puts the stamp of nobility upon the peoples who have courage to meet it. All other trials are substitutes, which never really put men into the position where they have to make the great decision -- the alternative of life or death...."

"Given that the nineteenth century was the century of Socialism, of Liberalism, and of Democracy, it does not necessarily follow that the twentieth century must also be a century of Socialism, Liberalism and Democracy: political doctrines pass, but humanity remains, and it may rather be expected that this will be a century of authority...a century of Fascism. For if the nineteenth century was a century of individualism it may be expected that this will be the century of collectivism and hence the century of the State....

The foundation of Fascism is the conception of the State, its character, its duty, and its aim. Fascism conceives of the State as an absolute, in comparison with which all individuals or groups are relative, only to be conceived of in their relation to the State. The conception of the Liberal State is not that of a directing force, guiding the play and development, both material and spiritual, of a collective body, but merely a force limited to the function of recording results: on the other hand, the Fascist State is itself conscious and has itself a will and a personality -- thus it may be called the "ethic" State....

...The Fascist State organizes the nation, but leaves a sufficient margin of liberty to the individual; the latter is deprived of all useless and possibly harmful freedom, but retains what is essential; the deciding power in this question cannot be the individual, but the State alone...."

" If every age has its own characteristic doctrine, there are a thousand signs which point to Fascism as the characteristic doctrine of our time. For if a doctrine must be a living thing, this is proved by the fact that Fascism has created a living faith; and that this faith is very powerful in the minds of men is demonstrated by those who have suffered and died for it."

23. No, because no one actually listens to that shit.
1. No one knows what a fascist is.
2. The terms "fascist", "socialist", "Communist", "Nazi", etc. are thrown around so much anymore they've lost their meaning and impact.
3. The only people that throw those terms or around readily or actually believe them are already part of the choir .

Simply because they do it, doesn't mean we should sink to their level.

Whether it's the Repug politicians exploiting their people or the idiot Tea Partiers who scream SOCIALISM without even knowing what it is, we shouldn't follow their lead.

Do you think they are misguided gentlemen?

They are fucking criminal pigs.

Yes I KNOW what "Fascists" were - and are...there are others who have attained your high degree in knowledge/erudition.

Please do as you wish, but don't hold others to your "higher standards" of foolishness.
