Spot, the dog, waits...for his friend who won't be returning.

Sad. My dad had a special friendship with the neighbor's dog. Every morning, as he left the house for work, Pop would stop to pet his friend, who waited on our back porch.

The morning my dad passed away 36 years ago, his buddy sat at the edge of our yard, and watched all the commotion. He knew something wasn't right. That day was the last he was seen alive. A few days later, he was found lying dead in a nearby field.

1. That video is so sad; made me cry.
At least "Spot" is still around...I'm sorry for your loss of your dad and Buddy.

Our dog mourned for months when my daughter moved away to college...and when she finally came home, the tail was spinning like a corkscrew, that dog was so overjoyed.

2. One of our dogs came to us after her prior owner passed away.
She was an emotional wreck. She could not understand that Barbara, her prior owner, was gone. She would not allow JennaLaw, my roommate, to put her down for more than a moment at a time for weeks.

Now she is bonded to me as if I'm what she lives for. Lord Help anyone who tries to take her from me! She lives in my lap. She won't leave my side.

If anything were to happen to me, and she somehow lost a second owner, I don't know if she could handle it.

6. This sounds like the Story of Shep, "Who meet the trains" waiting for his master to return

7. Dang...
...I seem to have a speck of dust in my eye.

Or someone is cutting onions...or maybe it is my allergies.

This story is sad and heartwarming...just like that episode of Futurama - which I will not watch anymore because I start crying in anticipation of the scene that causes the tears.

9. Why does the son let the dog roam the streets like that?
Poor thing. Perhaps the grieving would go a little easier if the dog had a new home and people to love.

10. That all you got?
Criticism?

This is Texas and sometimes dogs roam pretty free. There are many stories (dog loyalty) just like this.

11. Is that all I "got"?
Actually, now that you mention it, I do have a couple of other comments.

1. That poor dog -- and all the other dogs that you say Texans allow to run free -- deserves a loving home. He shouldn't be left to roam the streets. There are many hazards lurking for stray pets, ranging from traffic to wild animals to people with nefarious motives.

2. The best thing the son can do to honor his father's memory is to take his beloved pet and either give it a loving home or find someone who can/will.

3. Try not to let the reporter's sappy spin on the story cloud the real issue(s). That is good advice to heed whether we are discussing stray dogs or the runup to war or anything in between.

BTW, thanks for asking!

12. It is my understanding from a followup report
that Spot has a home, food, and people that take care of him.

"Spot is well cared for and has an abundance of food, water, and plenty of shelter."

So, he is being taken care of. Perhaps that involves letting him go to wait for his friend.
