In 2008 I love talking politics with my mother, she's very informed. Talking to some of my sisters about politics is like speaking another language. My mother is a Southern Baptist, she believes that any time you have a problem you should "pray on it." She doesn't go to church, but she does read the Bible. She has never tried to force her religious views on my siblings and I, and I respect her for that. She talked about the time when she grew up, without a TV , telephone or video games. She said they had a radio and they would all sit around and listen to the radio shows.
Now parents are so busy and the children are involved in so many activities , that people don't have time to connect. I think that's one of the myths about liberals, we don't care about family and we think anything goes as long as it makes you happy. There is also the myth that we are not religious or spiritual people. I care very much about the family unit, I think that's the best foundation for producing productive members of our society.
I'm not talking about a family in the sense that they are blood related, but people who live together and try to raise their children with love , compassion and respect. People who care about the well being of each other and work together for a common goal. I have a friend who is an atheist and I respect her right to not believe and she respects mine to believe.
My son has his own views, he's anti- choice and anti-death penalty. My husband and I both believe in allowing him to find his own way when it comes to politics. We discuss the issues with him and he comes to his own conclusions. He likes Obama and he's against the war. He loves to read about history and he tries to seek out as much info as possible. I think a lot of people get stuck in a certain mindset, they won't allow themselves to think outside of their party affiliation. I try not to do that, I'm all about what's fair, what's right and what's just.
Liberals have to make it known that we are not the "anything goes" crowd. Yes, we believe in family and some of us even believe in God. We also believe in common decency and human rights for all people. Some of us believe that parents should have a say in the lives of their underage children. The perception of liberals has been twisted and distorted for far too long. Which is why those on the right use the term "liberal" like it's a four letter word. My mother is the type of liberal I would like to be, a God loving, family values, anti-war, Pro choice, Pro-America liberal.
2010 update:
My son is currently enrolled in college and has moved towards the left. His eyes have been opened since he has studied history and politics. He feels very strongly that the repubaggers and Faux News are harmful to our democracy. He came to me right after the election and he was very irritated and worried. He said " Mom, what are we going to do? Why didn't people realize they were being lied to, why didn't people realize how extreme these people are?"
I told him, now you see what I've been ranting about for the last eight years.
It's hard to get the truth out there and convince people they've been lied to, when they hear he same message from the radio, TV and read it in the newspaper. The people fail to realize that one person (Rupert Murdoch) owns all those sources of information, so they're still only getting one point of view. He says it's not information it's pure propaganda and Faux isn't a "real news channel. Luckily with age comes wisdom.
