TORONTO Nov 8 (
Reuters) - U.S. Steel (X.N: Quote) has locked out about 900 workers at its plant in Hamilton, Ontario, after the company and the union failed to reach an agreement on pension plans and retiree benefits.
The lockout began late on Sunday after the union refused to put U.S. Steel's latest contract offer before its members for a vote.

Union leaders at the former Stelco plant have rejected the demands, accusing the company of trying to "shaft" current retirees and future employees.
Rolf Gerstenberger, president of United Steelworkers Local 1005, said the company's proposal cannot be put to a vote, as it would be undemocratic and harm the interests of thousands of retirees. .........(more)
