School choirs throughout the nation are prospering of late, and choir directors are singing the praises of an unlikely ally: network TV.

"I'll tell you what is boosting this thing," said Mark Cerutti, director of secondary education for the Elk Grove Unified School District. "It's 'Glee.' "

Craig Gregory, assistant director of the American Choral Directors Association, said he's seen a definite increase in interest in choir, sometimes known as glee club, in recent years.

" 'Glee' has a lot to do with it," he said of the Emmy-nominated Fox television series. " 'Glee' has taken today's music and thrown it into the choir room."

1. But but won't the National Endowment for the Arts
come knocking on funding doors now?

You know we MUST fund military killing machines before anything like the arts or Social Security.

2. Thanks for turning a positive story into a negative by your
comments.

And fwiw, it seems these programs are doing fairly well on their own. The schools are happy about students' interest in singing; so am I.

3. Music & arts in schools are being cut back because of school deform & the city/state fiscal crisis,
or hadn't you heard?

Non-core programs are *not* "doing well".

4. Sorry for the cynicism
It is a good thing that students are interested in the arts because it shows they are about more than just money.

What is bad is that the "adults" in charge now poo-poo the whole idea.

And you will see if you read a lot of RW sites that many members feel that "happy people don't need the arts." Makes me sick.

5. Amen. The level of threadcrapping around here boggles the mind.
It's gone from being just anything positive about Democrats or the President to ANY KIND OF GOOD NEWS AT ALL. :eyes:

7. This is a good thing. I sometimes find myself singing some of the
stuff we did in high school chorus way back in 1960. The problem is the high notes when I'm on the motorcycle - several bugs have been consumed.

Hooray for the first music -- singing.

10. I just said to someone recently
that I bet a lot of school choirs were growing in both interest and innovation since that show became popular.
