Kitty Delenn's update
It's almost 9 pm Monday night, and things are relatively quiet--tomorrow's the "big" day when she finally goes to Radiocat!

She's been to the vet, and had all the tests done. The new vet seems very young--did anyone see "Father of the Bride 2" with Steve Martin? When Steve Martin meets the doctor for his wife and his daughter at the hospital? That's my impression, too!

I have to decide what to send with her for her bed, because it's going to get destroyed at the end of her stay there. I also have to send some food with her, and see what kind of toys to also send. She loves caps from milk bottles, hair rubber bands, and that kind of stuff, but she's always losing them!

I'll take a picture of her in the morning, and then when we get to the lab/clinic. I'll also be getting updates during the week as well.

Thanks everyone--hope all is well with youl.

1. Good luck with your fur baby
if you got some really old and ratty towels that might be good... the kind that are near their end anyway.

8. Or, an old t-shirt that has your scent on it.
That way, she'll have something familiar to comfort her while she's away. I remember when my kitty went through that. It was harder on me than it was on her. All she did was get an injection, and sit in a cage and get lots of attention all day for nearly a week. She loved talk your ear off, and she was delighted to have lots of extra sets of ears at whom to chatter. Meanwhile, I was at home missing her.

9. I've always named my kits from TV characters
Was your daughter named after the character from Babylon 5?

Once, back in the mid 70s, we had Starsky, Baretta and Harry O. Then some from pace 1999, and so on. When I got my Jessica (my avatar) in the early 90s, I originally named her MacGyver, but her first night in the house had her searching just about everywhere and anywhere, so I thought Jessica (as in Murder She Wrote) was more apt.

10. She's getting the radioactive iodine injection
for hyperthyroidism. She'll be kept at the clinic for three nights, because she will be radioactive for a while!

Many wonderful people here at DU helped me in getting it done. I could not have done it without their compassion, goodwill and donations. I love DUers!

12. I had that done myself. Had to launder the sheets every day for a week and couldn't hug anyone.
My son got a new puppy the day I had it done and I wouldn't go near the pup for 2 weeks, which was hard.

I assume she will be on meds afterward,as I am. Took close to a year for them to get the right dosage, but all is well.

Good luck.

13. In my nearly 25 years of referring feline patients for I131 treatment of
hyperthyroidism, I have never yet had one require subsequent thyroid supplementation. While it is theoretically possible that it would be needed, in the real world we just don't see it. They nuke the thyroid within an inch of its life but don't completely destroy it.

15. Update!
It's Wednesday. Yesterday, my friend Steve took me and Delenn to Radiocat. I wanted to take a picture of her before we left home, but I don't function well at 7:30 in the morning after going to bed at 4:30. For me, it was slightly chaotic, because I've put on weight (from insulin) and trying to get into a pants that fit me was a nightmare!

The vet techs and other people at the vets were very nice and gregarious and collected from me all the info I had. I left with the vet a bed throw, the kind that is made from some form of polyester for Delenn, that couldn't be taken home, which they destroy. She promised to call and leave messages for updates.

Sure enough, she called yesterday saying that Delenn got Her injection, and everything was going well.

This morning, she called again, saying that Delenn came through the night fine, she was eating and drinking, and using the cat box.

There was an older woman there who had a kit who was also getting the treatment. She had her other cat get it last year, and her comment was that it was like magic--one day they're hyperthyroid, and then they're not!

I guess that'S about it for now! :)

16. It IS like magic!
My kitty went from "skin-and-bones and hyperactive" to her calm, albeit still talkative self overnight. She put back on all weight fairly quickly, too, without eating me out of house and home, like she did prior to treatment.

Glad to hear your kitty is doing well.
